brake pedal on auto trucks, some wide some narrow why?
Ok guys here's a good one for you, It's got me stumped and I can't figure it out.
My od mans 84 c10 has a narrow brake pedal like a stick shift would have, but it's auto and was auto from factory, and it's power brakes. I saw another guys post on here where his is narrow as well, and I've seen maybe 1 or 2 more online same way. My dad said his old man's old truck he bought new 79 or older had the same thing it was auto and had a narrow pedal, most autos I seen have the wide pedal. Why is this? why do some have narrow pedals? narrow wide

Re: brake pedal on auto trucks, some wide some narrow why?
Mine have all been the big pedal. Both 77's, both 79's and my '88. I think every single one of them I've seen have been the big pedal. Weird.

Wide pedal-auto transmission. Narrow pedal-manual transmission.

The OP stated it was an original auto tranny, and there is a picture to boot.

Re: brake pedal on auto trucks, some wide some narrow why?
I would have thought they were changed for some reason but my old man said the one his dad bought brand new had a small pedal, auto and was bought from the dealer.
Now our 84 does have the LD brakes with 1 inch rotors. I forget what plant it is though. My original thought was it was a stick shift from factory, but the SPID or rpo's sunk that theory and then I thought somebody had yanked one from a stick shift and put it in, who knows it can be very possible on ours.

My 86 with non power brakes is the narrow pedal. It is a factory auto truck and the pedal is original too.

Re: brake pedal on auto trucks, some wide some narrow why?
the 86 we had and I posted had a big pedal and it was factory auto 4x4 and had power brakes but had the LD brakes on it. It's weird IMo just sort of random.

Re: brake pedal on auto trucks, some wide some narrow why?
Design intent was big pedal for automatic with power brakes.
It should have the small pedal for automatic with manual brakes, prior to a certain model year. And, naturally, the small pedal for a stick shift, regardless of manual brake or power brakes (because the clutch pedal has to fit in there). Anything else I would suspect was either changed or misbuilt at the plant. The plant did not have the luxury choosing building brake pedals any way they saw fit; that would have been specified by engineering. K

Re: brake pedal on auto trucks, some wide some narrow why?
That was my thoughts, and maybe if they happen to run out of big ones use small or something.I wonder if our truck was manual brakes then, I think it was power from factory but can't remember, I know it's power now.
Is there anyway to know without the rpo sticker sheet? it's long gone now, came apart when we first got the truck.

Re: brake pedal on auto trucks, some wide some narrow why?
May have something to do with trim level. I have owned several 84's and they all had big pedal, however all mine were high sierra, silverado, if perhaps it was a custom deluxe, w/t package or cheyenne etc, any low trim level truck it may have came with the small pedal because they may have run those trucks down the line and put manual trans in some and auto in some, and only had the small brake pedal. Never seen one with small brake pedal with auto trans, but like I said, nearly every one I have ever seen has been higher trim level.

Re: brake pedal on auto trucks, some wide some narrow why?
Check what plant it was made at, it probably was specific to a certain plant / line that did that.

They would not be parceled out based on something minor like variations in brake pedals. K
