Re: cam ideas guys???
it would be best to post this in the engines and drivetrain forum, also some more specs on your motor would help others recommend good parts.

Re: cam ideas guys???
look into comp cams high energy line. They are great for offroad, towing and general daily drivers. They have a tight lobe seperation and not as much duration. They give you ALOT of low down torque so if ya off idle power, than this is the setup for ya

Re: cam ideas guys???
the 383 I just sold has an old Melling MTC-1 cam and makes great power down low and continues to make power on up to 5k plus.
Its a 278/288 cam with 204/214 @ .050 dur, .420/.443 lift, 107/117 C/L.

Re: cam ideas guys???
Thats a steal...but the MTC-1 is no "Thumper"...just a better then stock, torquey, cam. It makes good power, even tho the lift is a little small.

Re: cam ideas guys???
thumpr cams are for posers..I have taken at least 10 of them out for customers. Lunati's voodoo cams and Ultradyne are the best off the shelf grinds out there. I run a voodoo 60204 in my 454 and have better idle response, vaccum and power curve than the big mutha thumpr that was in it. Not to mention an extra 21hp and 19 ft lbs of torque at the fly. Granted my gains are partially due to my engine setup.

Re: cam ideas guys???
For what you are doing... 3.73 Gears with 35" Tires, your going to want a torquey Cam
Comp Cams has their XE 4x4 Cams made for 4x4's... Can't get much more specific than that http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-12-239-3/ http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-12-243-3/ |

Re: cam ideas guys???
I recommend the Comp 268H, its a mild cam for a mild set-up. If you're not going to do much to the engine this will work just fine for you. Please don't over cam it.

Re: cam ideas guys???
Agree on checking out the engine forum here.
But I'll throw my $0.02 in here. With stock heads definitely go on the conservative side. Stock heads typically don't flow much more from .500" lift and above so avoid a cam with more lift than that. Larger duration will make the cam sound better at idle, but you have to rev it higher for the cam to work. From my experience a larger cam will make more power than a smaller one, but it's gets boring waiting for the motor to "come up on the cam". For example, the 350/327 cam I have doesn't really start to pull till 27-2800 rpm. With the stock heads it is wound out by 5200- that's a pretty small window really. I'd prefer something that started pulling about 500 lower and I have a 2wd so no 35s to try and spin. Newer cam designs are much better than what I have, but it does reference my point. Comp Cams do make a neat FREE engine simulator that will help you select your cam.
