Need Distributor help Please!
Hi again all,
So I think the engine is ok and I did not cook it. I refilled with new oil and coolant and there is no cross-contamination but I have one more issue. I marked the distributor in 2 places but I think I may have reinstalled it incorrectly since it idles rough and won't rev very high. So another newbie question - how do I re-align it. I can take it off and try again but I am assuming there is a process I can follow other than just shooting in the dark. Thanks again for all of the help. This intake manifold gasket job has turned into a bit of nightmare. I appreciate all of the guidance. |

Re: Need Distributor help Please!
A suggestion first? might help the readers to know whats been going on with your ride, i would probably keep posting in the same thread that you started the other day, that way tho's that want to help will be able to read the whole story.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=418453 Best way is to first pull the neg battery terminal, then remove the drivers side valve cover and rotate the engine clockwise via a 5/8's socket on the center dampener bolt and watch the intake and exhaust rockers, a 4 stroke works like this, intake, compression, power or downstroke, exhaust, after the intake rocks ( be sure not to mix the intake up with the exhaust rocker) and comes back up keep rotating untill the timing mark on the dampener is at TDC or O degrees, then when you drop in the distributor it should have the rotor pointing to about 6:30 looking down on it, when the cap is installed on the distributor the #1 plug wire should line up closley with #1 on the cap. http://www.classiccarauto.com/impala...istributor.png If you don't want to pull the valve cover: As the engine is rotated, probably by a friend, place your finger in the #1 plug hole and feel for compression, if the air is pushing out your on the compression stroke, keep rotating untill the timing mark on the dampener is at TDC or O degrees, ten install the rotor. I don't advise using a remote start button unless one is very experianced.

That is all great advice, thanks again and thanks also for the posting advice. I really don't know what I would do without all of this forum's knowledge.

Re: Need Distributor help Please!
One last question, after I get the engines aligned and ready for the distributor to drop in will it automatically line up to 6:30 or will I have to aim for it with a couple of tries? I am asking because of how the distributor rotates as in penetrates downward. Thanks again.
