Question 7 inch Conversion Headlight?

Has anyone installed a HID conversion on there truck? I am looking at coollights.com and they have a 7 inch headlight with an LED halo light around the perimeter of the beam. It use an H4 bulb and locally in my area, they sell the HID kits for $80. I'm just wondering if anyone has done a conversion.

Re: 7 inch Conversion Headlight?

I have been thinking of trying the same thing.. They have some one ebay that are 7 inch blue halos with a H4 bulb.. The also are drilled with blinker lights so I was thinkng of getting rid of my driving lights on my 67 to make it look more sleek.. I will take pics if I do it..

Re: 7 inch Conversion Headlight?

HELLA makes some conversion headlights.... thats what I have in mine. I really like them cause they dont look like the "ricer" ones on ebay..... They are actually glass (not plastic) and have lines in them like factory bulbs do. So they look factory until you fire up the HID's. They take an H4 bulb if I can remember correctly. Then I just bought some H4 HID's and put em in..... I use them everyday.... So yes it definetly can be done....

Re: 7 inch Conversion Headlight?

H4 is a Halogen bulb. Not an HID or Xenon. They are just lamp housings (in their intended form) that take a run-of-the-mill replacement bulb. I guess anything can be converted but the light diffusion sucks. Too many hot spots.

Re: 7 inch Conversion Headlight?

I'm by no means an expert on this, but every car or truck that the owner slapped some cheap-o HID replacement bulb into didn't work worth $h!t. The factory or aftermarket manufacturer sells their headlights with H4, H1, H7, etc....bulbs because the reflector and lens were [hopefully] designed to work with the light output of those particular lamps. Putting in an HID H4 replacement bulb will do nothing but make your lights look blue and annoy oncoming traffic with their horrible glare. If you want true HID performance lighting you need to look for a unit that is designed from the get-go for HID lamps. IMHO- projector (aka- ellipsoidial) headlights are precisely designed for this application. Below is an example of what I'm talking about. Can you pick up a set for $80? No way, more like $500-$600! So if you are serious about performance lighting you'll need to shell out some cash. If that's out of the budget- go get some nice Hella E-Code Halogen units and put them in with some Silverstar bulbs and the ever-necessary relay upgrade and you will have very good light output!

Re: 7 inch Conversion Headlight?

The problem with H4 "conversions" is that the light in not directed correctly. If you look at any tru HID light housing it has a small refracting dome to focus the light.... think of it as Spot light (hid) Vs. Flood Light (H4). It may be brighter but most of the time you blind oncoming traffic. Its also illegal in most if not all states.... just that its not enforced...

Re: 7 inch Conversion Headlight?

True it is illegal a traffic violation... But when you need more light sometime you need to do something... But after reading up on the Jeep 7 inch headlight bulbs with the H13 bulb and adding a headlight conversion kit from LMC or any other supplier. And this setup is DOT approved,,,, not a bad deal. And I just found the headlights this morning on a wrecked Jeep Wrangler with the wire harness and bulbs for $20.00 dollars,,,,, HaHa not bad, thank GOD for your local Salvage Yards.

Thanks to all for comments

Re: 7 inch Conversion Headlight?

Quite frankly a 7" Hella, Bosch or Cibie is such a far superior light to a sealed beam that there is no comparison. The optics of a good European headlight are so good that you really don't need HID. If you want more light a 55/100 or 75/100 bulb will provide an incredible amount of light. You will likely need relays though as our stock wiring will not handle those kinds of loads. Like HID's overwattage bulbs are also not legal.

Re: 7 inch Conversion Headlight?

Make life easy on yourself by calling up Classic Industries and ordering:

1179X = 7-inch, convex outer (like stock), Xenon headlight
MX01132 = upgrade wiring kit for headlights (complete with modern relays)

I recent installed this Xenom headlight system in my 1971 Cheyenne. It was fairly priced, a cinch to do the install, and the light is radically more white and bright than the previous halogen bulbs that were there. Plus, the new Xenon bulbs look 90% the same as the stock type bulbs.

If your truck has four front headlights, Classic Industries sells specific bulbs (one low beam, one high beam) and 4-headlight wiring harness for that too.

Re: 7 inch Conversion Headlight?

I bought h-4 straight plug ins I have to go to work right now but I will look up the guy who sells the lights real cheap higher shipping from overseas Japan I think.
So far in two months of use no overheating problems, all I did was change the light housings (which come with a h-4 light already installed) and put in the I think 8005 brightness lights?
Ok here is the ebay seller...
