Hey guys, just picked up this rear suspension for my 56 chevy pickup. what Im wondering is, what is the weakest part of the suspension? Im going to run either air bags or coilovers. Havent made a final decision yet there. Kinda curious if the arms need to be boxed or if the front crossmember needs to be buffed up? Also Im using a 12 bolt rearend out of a newer chevy truck. What are you guys using for a panhard bar since it doesnt have the mount on the rearend? thanks in advance Robert

THE PANHARD BARS ON 62-64 CHEVY TRUCKS WITH COILS HAVE BRACKETS THAT ARE WELDED DIRECTLY TO THE AXEL TUBE. LOOK AT THESE & I THINK YOU'LL LIKE THIS SETUP. I'M PUTTING ONE ON A 72 SHORTY THAT I'M PUTTING A FORD 9" IN THATS OUT OF A 75 LINCOLN. THAT WAY I'LL HAVE 4-WHEEL DISC'S. JOHN

The design of the 1967 Chevrolet trailing arm suspension is the same suspension design that is used in all NASCAR racecars today.

The links are the strongest part and do not need to be stiffened up. I had as much as 3 tons of weight inside of my panel truck - and believe me - it would take a lot more then that to bend one of those links.

Nothing wrong with the stock configuration at all, remember the load is mostly transferred directly through the springs/bags vertically to the frame. There is very little moment transferred to the arms or crossmember.

I put trailing arms in m '50 and I'm using this panhard:

So Leevon do you have any pics of the panhard bar installed yet? Also no one said anything about the front crossmember being weak?

Early Classic Enterprises has trailing arms, coil springs, adjustable panhard rods, and they also have the crossmember that the arms attach to. You might want to look at their offerings.

I'll have some in a week or two...still trying to locate everything. You run out of room quick with the trailing arms, rear end, air bags, shocks, panhard AND trying to fit a sway bar. Forget about the exhaust

Just make sure the trailing arms aren't rusted. I had one fail on my old 70 but it was due to rust around the rivets which allowed the two halves to spread apart.

They make a kit that has an adjustable panhard bar, the braket to weld on the rearend for the panhard and the pads that attach to the link bars. I know ecklers has the kit I think it ran around 140 dollars

Thanks guys for the info...........Now has anyone thought about making the crossmember with a few more mounting holes? Like an adjustment on the front of a four link setup for traction. My cousin gave me this idea, wonder if it will work? Any suggestions.........
