5.3L Vortec help

I decided I want to replace the inline 6 for a Vortec 5.3 and trans but I have a quick question regarding years and types. I found one locally. its a 2005 5.3 with 65K miles and "drive by cable" for $2k including trans etc. Does not include the two O2 sensors. Is a drive by cable easier then a drive by wire to retro on my 69SWB?

Re: 5.3L Vortec help

to answer your ? is a toss up. Either one is workable, the 2005 was Drive by wire only so make sure of what they are selling is what you are buying, so if you want to go DBC then you will have to change the throttle body or intake.

there are write ups here that will help you install either one, look under engines and drivetrain, LSx swaps and you can read for a year.
65K miles is pretty good so if it truely is a 2005 with the trans ya better snatch it up.

You will be most pleased once it is completed.

Toss up really. If you can get everything (ECM, harnesses, hoses, etc) that's not a bad deal but you need to get the pedal assembly and wiring also.

If you want to switch to drive by cable, I have an intake for your for $50 plus shipping.

Re: 5.3L Vortec help

that bout sumes it up, 05 didnt have a DBC only DBW, so be sure to make sure you're getting what you pay for...but in answer to your question, yes the DBC is a little bit easier

Re: 5.3L Vortec help

A 2005 could be drive by cable if it came out of a van. Just a FYI.

Re: 5.3L Vortec help

I was just about to say, I have had a 05 and now an 06 6.0 LQ4 that were both drive by cable. But they both came out of base model work vans.

Re: 5.3L Vortec help

I apreciate everyones help. My goal is to do a successful transplant so if I have to change the intake for a DBC, then maybe I should go with a DBW. Is that A correct statement?

thanks for everyones help.

Re: 5.3L Vortec help

I would see if your motor comes with the DBW pedal assy, it might be cheaper and easier to purchase a DBC intake and TB than the pedal assy.

Re: 5.3L Vortec help

I can't really help you on if the DBW or DBC is easier. But I've read that DBW is easier to set up with cruise control.

Re: 5.3L Vortec help

IMO DBC is easier to fix/maintain, it has basically the same stuff I am used to with my old engine, however, 33shooter is most correct about the cruise though, DBC isnt impossible to get the cruise to work but a little more difficult.

Honestly if I had to do it all again, which I probably will on another toy, I would get a 700r4 built for me, install it and run the truck until I found a suitable engine, then swap engines with the DBW, this would be the least expensive and doing it a piece at a time would allow me to drive it and work out any bugs if needed. I failed to mention the speedo will have to be changed out for an electronic version or purchase a controller box which isnt cheap if you go with the 4l60e.

This way you can spread the cost out some too. If this isnt a concern then you must do what you want.
