Buying a parts truck - Is it worth it?

I need a few parts to finish my truck and have found most of the parts.... but the guy wants to sell them all together. He doesn't want to part it out.

This truck is a 72 3/4 with clean title.

It has an AC cab, functioning factory air system, 400 transmission, factory auxiliary tank, a couple sets of trim, 2 good pair of fenders, 2 sets of doors (1 good, 1 rusted), brand new weather stripping, two hoods (1 great, 1 fair), rolling chassis with a good rear end. No engine.

What I'm looking to keep are the best pair of fenders, the best pair of doors, the best set of trim, the weatherstripping, and a few misc parts.

I'll definitely be getting rid of the AC cab with title, the rolling chassis, the rear end, and the 400 transmission.

Would this deal be worth the $650 the guy is asking?

i think it's worth it. think about the cash it would cost you to buy some good used parts that you'll get off the truck. sell the cab, tranny and left overs for 300-400 and you'll come out ahead.

If you have the money, have the room, the truck has parts that you want to use on your truck, have the time to sell off the parts you don't use, then I say why not? Unless you are not allowed to have a parts vehicle where you are you should be able to make back what you paid for the works and at the very least have the parts you needed for just a little labor on your part. Around here at least what you are paying for the works as long as it isn't too rusty and has all of its parts. However prices are very regional. WES

I bought a complete truck to get mine. Paid $2800 then sold all the parts I didn't want for around $1500. But thats in California where any running truck will go for around $2000.

If its real clean, I might be interested in the complete Aux tank set up. (tank tank hangers, filler tube, tube channel, floor switch and wiring to guage switch on dash etc.

If you have the money and space, I would do it. Especially with all those good parts you mentioned, and what you don't need sell off and you will get some if not all your money you spent back. You should make pretty good off the cab and th400. I had a chance to get a running 70 parts truck that had a lot of good parts, was gonna combine them with what I already had and sell/scrap the rest to the recycler. The guy that owned it got put in jail before I could get back with him on it, and it disappeared after that.

X2 - just make sure you have somewhere for it that doesn't create problems with the wife/neighbors- I bought a Longhorn a while back thinking it would be nice to have, but I really didn't have anywhere to put it, so I ended up selling it and took a bit of a beating on it. But if you have room, go for it. At that price it's definitely worth it.

I might be interested in the rear end if it is leaf spring and we could find a way to meet up or if you could ship it. Do you know if it a Dana 60 or a GM rearend?

I'm not sure. I wasn't too interested in the rear end so I never looked under it or thought to ask. I'll talk to this guy again this evening and find out.

Re: Buying a parts truck - Is it worth it?

Here's an example: I bought an 81 just for 500 just for the power disk and front suspension. I sold the cab and front clip for 150 (bargain), the bed for 400 (I was lucky), wheels for 100, and traded the rest for help in taking it apart and getting rid of it within 2 weeks. If my wife would have been patient, I could have made another 300-400, but it was worth it for the peace.

Re: Buying a parts truck - Is it worth it?

I would do it, you seem to have a plan of what you want off the truck and you will be surprised at all the little odds and ends that will be on it that you forgot you needed for your truck as well as what you listed above, Can easily make your money back on it
