Re: 4.11 Posi unit. 1968 12 bolt. $300 shipped.
The information I'm finding in the drivetrain area says this is a series 4 carrier and will accept 3.73-4.11 gears. Let see if any of our experts can confirm! Thanks, Sharpie

Ok, let's give Novafrog some time to confirm if 3.73 gears will bolt to the carrier. You are next in line. Thanks, Sharpie

Re: 4.11 Posi unit. 1968 12 bolt. $300 shipped.
Here's what I found at hotrod.com
Based on this info it probably can't use a 3:73. That has me thinking..my 383 with 4:11s and 700r4 might be too much for my application. Sorry for jumping up without doing all my homework. I will give up my place in line to the next buyer. ip 15: When shopping for 12-bolt differential parts at a swap meet, keep this in mind: Chevrolet generally used three different types of differentials for the 12-bolt: the Two Series carrier, the Three Series carrier, and the Four Series carrier. The "Two Series" has little use in a hi-po application and should be avoided if at all possible. The Three Series carrier accepted ring and pinions that ranged from 3.08:1 to 3.73:1, while the Four Series carrier accepted ring and pinions ranging from 3.90:1 to 6.14:1. While there are a number of subtle variations between the three types of carriers, a major difference is the thickness of the gear flange. Two Series carriers are the thinnest, while Three Series flanges are thinner than Four Series flanges. Because of the size of the flange, the carriers cannot be randomly used with ring and pinion sets from the trio of "families" (unless, of course, special gears with custom ring gear mounting surfaces are used. These special gears are readily available from Richmond Gear). Additionally, the Two Series carriers do not have any webs on the top of the carrier. Three and Four Series carriers do have webs.

Is that car or truck info. I believe there are variations between the two. Any input from other members would be appreciated. I don't want Novafrog to buy parts he can't use. Thanks, Sharpie

Re: 4.11 Posi unit. 1968 12 bolt. $300 shipped.
Looks like they are referring to 12 bolts in general. Here is the full article(see tip 15): http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/c...all/index.html

Re: 4.11 Posi unit. 1968 12 bolt. $300 shipped.
I would like to add...they do make aftermarket 3:73 gears for the 4 series carriers so Novafrog should have no worries.
I'll leave now..I've caused enough confusion!

Re: 4.11 Posi unit. 1968 12 bolt. $300 shipped.
Unlike the GM Car Posi Carriers, which were 3 series carriers to 3 series gears and 4 series carriers to 4 series gears! I believe the 68-72 Chev Truck posi carrier was for 3:73 and 4:11. The GM parts book sheds some light in gp#5.511 for the posi clutch discs 65-68 c-10 w/ 3:73 exc 4x4, 69 c-10 w/3:07 and 70-72 c-10 and blazer w/3:07,3:73 and 4:11. I think you are good to GO......................Stay away from aftermarket gears, they tend to be hard to setup and noisy.

Thanks w314! This matches the info. I found. I hate to make guarantees I can't back up. Novafrog may want to "hop" back in after hearing this. Sharpie

Re: 4.11 Posi unit. 1968 12 bolt. $300 shipped.
Bill that 12 bolt 4x4 posi and gears will go right in your 71-72 housing..yes..a bolt in..As long as you use all the shims and spacers from the old housing.(to keep the same pattern) Done it alot..
12 bolt rear..up to 79 truck and chevyvans had them also. same thing as long as it is a 12 bolt "truck" rear Carrier 's fits 3.42 and down , and 3.73 and up..The 3.42 were in later trucks..only thing you could get in 67-72 was the following 3.73 was standard ratio...no option on glovbox door label. 3.08 was an option..showed on label 4.10 was an option showed on label Posi was on label as option too. Man i need my red book..I cant find it.. |

Re: 4.11 Posi unit. 1968 12 bolt. $300 shipped.
Hi Bill, that is my understanding. The only issue seems to be what gears the posi unit will accept. Maybe someone who is very knowledgeable in rear end rebuilds can confirm. Sharpie
