Looking for a cam suggestion for BBC - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have another thread about this motor somewhere else but wanted to ask a specific question in this section

I have been looking at cams and have narrowed it down to either the xe274 or xe284 from Comp. I will give you the info I know about my engine but if you need to know something else just let me know.

454 bored .60
781 heads with 2.19/1.88 valves and a little porting work.(in the works)
Around 10:1 Compression.(Assumption right now)
Steel balanced crank
holly 750 w/ vacuum sec.
Performer intake
3.73 gears
Stall converter yet to be determined.

This truck is just going to be a toy for weekend driving. Not a daily driver at all. I want something that is still going to make enough vacuum for my power brakes. Can you guys point me in the right direction. I can't find any Big Blocks on youtube running the xe284 cam. they are all SB. I am wanting a mean sounding lope but I know I shouldn't base my cam decision souly off how it sounds at idle. I need something somewhat streetable so it isn't a complete pain to drive. I don't want a cam so big it is dying at stoplights and stuff. Thanks for your help and if you need more info please let me know.

Yes I had read that. Thanks though man. I am really just looking for some reasurance from people who know about this kind of stuff that I am going to be ok with the XE284. I am new to all of this and am trying to learn as I go.

By the way, I am wanting the Hydraulic Flat Tappet if that makes any difference.

Comp recommended a 3000 stall for that cam. How streetable is a stall that big going to be? Bear in mind this isn't a daily driver.

Do you guys think I can make enough vacuum to run power brakes with this cam. I can imagine why not. My buddy has a huge cam in his 350 and he doesn't have any trouble.

If you're looking at the XE284 you should get a Lunati VooDoo 60204. Very very similar cams, Both were designed by the same guy ("UDharold") and while the opening ramp is basically the same, the closing ramp is slightly tamer on the voodoo to get rid of the "ticking" problem that the extreme energy camshafts have.

FWIW I ran the xe284 in my 468 and I liked it. Plenty of vacuum for the brakes. I had the same heads/valves as you. It had a real nice lope, but I was at 10.5-1 compression. The compression ratio is going to make the lope you are looking for. Mine was a weekend cruiser, but I could have driven it daily with no problem. I had a Weiand tunnel ram. I think you will like it. I could have went with the XE292 (I think it was). Big blocks tend to smooth out big cams. I had a 3500 stall w/th350

I don't have any expierence with the Voodoo line, but I know UDHAROLD from another board. This guy knows what he is doing. He knows his sh*t.

The cam from lunati looks more like comps xe274. Am i wrong? As I said I am new to this.

You would be correct. That is my bad. Then with that said, I would recommend a Lunati VooDoo 60205.

Thanks Nolowrider, That was the kind of advice I was looking for. Nice to hear from someone that has actually ran one. I was really worried about vacuum. Good to know I will be in good shape.

Lunati is reccomending a 3500+ stall and an 850 cfm carb for that cam. I dont understand why when comps xe284 is so similiar and they just reccomend a 2800+ stall.

I am going to be running a 750 holley. Surely that will be enough carb for this engine. Also surely a 3000 stall will be plenty. I have heard those stall numbers are based off small blocks and they will stall out higher on a BB. Any truth to this?

Here is another question. Should I run a vacuum advance distributor or a mechanical advance? I found a MSD Pro Billet Mech adv with a MSD-6AL box, and blaster 2 coil on CL for a pretty good deal. I wasn't sure if I should go vacuum advance though.
