At the risk of someone else knowing for sure, my bet is that undercoating was not offered on a given trim line, but as an aftermarket item. I don't recall my '69 Truck Dealer's sales book saying anything about a CST having undercoating as a feature of that trim level.

I would have to agree with ChevLoRay. I picked up a 71 take off bed and it had no coating but just bare metal.

Re: under coating on bed only for cst ????

In the 60's and 70's there was this stuff called Ziebart. It was named after its inventor (a German guy). There were little shops set up everywhere that would spray it on. It was usually sprayed in the cavities between the bed walls, under the cab, inside the doors, and the wheelwells. That's probably why my truck didn't have a bunch of rust on it. lol

Here's a little info:

I know my 1970 CST had no factory undercoating. But it is possible the earlier trucks got factory undercoating.

Re: under coating on bed only for cst ????

Undercoating was (and still is in the Northeast) usually offered as a dealer option as a way to get some more $ in the sale. If it is the tar type it will be hard now and brittle and was probably done at the dealer. Ziebart was and is good stuff and was usually done at a specialty shop. Ziebart is still around. They drill holes in the door edges, jambs etc. and use wands to spray it into inaccessible areas. The holes were plugged with little plastic plugs so it is easy to spot a ziebarted vehicle. It is more amber/yellowish color than black if I recall correctly. Undercoating can be both good and bad. If the seal is breached it will trap moisture underneath and rot things out faster. Probably no way of telling who did yours.
