On my '83 there is a big hole (about 1.5" x 2") right next to the drivers side hood hinge that allows copious amounts of water to enter my cab when it rains or during a car wash. It looks like a hole cut by the factory and maybe i'm missing a cap or whatever should be plugging it. I covered it with duct tape last night because of the new carpet install but I would like to plug it with whatever is supposed to be there. Thanks, nik

does your's have a cap? I can see straight down to the floor of my cab through it. Lots of water can get in there. the floor was already starting to rust on the drivers side. I cleaned it all up, sprayed it with some rust incapsulator and i'm in the process of installing new capeting now. I do NOT want it to leak any more. I can fabricate a patch out of sheet metal or something but I would prefere a factory cap if one is available. I'll try to post a pic of what i'm talking about

I think you have other problems. The drain holes in the bottom of the cowl may be clogged up and the water has flooded your cowl. I have the exact same hole with nothing covering it and I have no water in the cab.

Yep - agree (mine is open there, too, on my '87).

As an aside, I see that nice "272" stamp on your cowl in this photo

Just a build sequence number for that particular cab in the body shop.

You have to keep them straight even before the VIN is affixed.

I'll have to go out and see if I can find that on mine (I happen to know my truck was number "87", at least it was designated that on the trim/final line).

I remember it being on the passenger side; do you know where that particular cab was built?

Wow. I must have something else going on. I had the hood up and sprayed the windshield with a water hose and the water seemingly ran right into it. I will look for any drains that are clogged. Thank you!

No problem man. Figured I'd show you a pic of the grommets that went in there or the cover or something. Popped the hood and saw the hole and was like uh oh he's got another problem. So I snapped a pic for ya. Hope you get it figured out. I got a spare cab out in th yard. Let me go find where the cowl drains and I'll take some pics to make it easier on ya.

Ok here's some pics of the drain holes. I tipped the cab on it's back to give you an idea of what you're looking at. The drain holes is in the center of the first pic and then a close up of the drivers side and them passenger side drains.

Thank you for taking the time to take and post pictures! That is very much appreciated! I sprayed the windshield/cowl area again and the water runs through there easily.... but some also runs into the area of the hole. I'll have to do some more investigating to figure out what the heck is going on. Thank you for your help!

but i think i had to patch a hole under the rubber to the right of the hole (rusted out both sides)that leaked on the 87

The hood is definately over it, but water that runs off of windshield flows down and into it. Its really weird! Its been doing it for a while, judging by the floor pan. It was starting to rust. I initially thought that it was leaking in through the windshield but I finnally sprayed the windshield lightly with the hose with the hood up and actually watched the water run right into it. does NOT seem to be backing up at all. Its bothering me now. I guess that there would be no harm in covering it. I don;t really see why it would be open and exposed in the first place...

Not really necessary (I was just curious) - but it would be the last character prior to the six digit sequence number.

Example: F123456 - or S526172.

that hole just leads into the cowl...the cowl cover that has all those slots in it covers this area and it's open to the weather...

here's some pictures for ya so you can understand alittle better...covering up that hole is really doing nothing...that hole drains into the cowl and you can see from the pics how open the cowl is underneath the cowl cover with the slots in it...

This may be where my problem lies. I can look down into that hole and see the wiring behind my dash. I can lay on my back and look up under the dash and see out of this hole! I'm assuming this is not the case on your trucks???

Agree - you can see that the larger openings under the wiper arms are not closed off, as well....
