Side Mirror Requirements
Does anyone know if you have to have 2 side mirrors (LH, RH) mounted in order to be street legal? Or can it just be the driver's side? And how about more specifically in Texas... Thanks for the info!

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
Well that is nearly enough of an answer for me! I kinda thought only one was required. So I will probably run with that unless someone else says differently.
I am just tryin to get the quick fix to get through the safety inspection in this state and then possibly mount both side mirrors permanently later on. |

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
I think for older vehicles Johnny law doesn't really push the issue due to the fact that some only came with one side. Unless your license says you have to have both. Wouldn't worry about it, the worse you could get is a fix-it ticket.

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
For some reason...I always get nailed without getting a "fix-it" ticket! Better not press my luck with that.

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
Don't know about Texas, but here you must have at least two mirrors and one has to be on the driver's door

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
for texas inspection you only have to have one mirror, which can be the rear view. UNLESS you have any rear tint, then you have to have them

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
Pass. side mirrors were an option until the 90s. I've had several cars and trucks with no pass. side mirrors. Sure I'm in Florida but I don't see them putting mirrors on cars cause they went to different states except maybe California (they always have to be different). The trooper I talked to about mine said as long as the vehicle had at least one mirror it was ok and most had a driver's and rear view at least. Good luck with your inspection and I'm glad Florida doesn't make us do inspections.

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
Ohhhh you would throw that last little bit in about the rear tint! Dang it...that is not what I was hoping to hear. Maybe I will try to run it through the shop and see what they say. That is great info to know though

I didn't see anything about the tint either. Other than inspecting for it in 1988 and newer vehicles. I think I made that cut! |

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
I don't have any friends here I am new to this area!! And with that being said I didn't really want to buy one either. I looked at the local parts stores and they didn't have anything that I thought would suffice.

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
Since you're new here lemme tell you that you have always been allowed to carry a loaded shotgun or rifle in your truck in Texas, hence the gun racks, which have disappeared in the big cities.
Welcome to DFW.... Oh, and Kellers on Northwest hwy is a great place to get a burger and beer while sitting arounf looking at the other cool cars at the drive in burger joint. Last edited by 69 Okie Truck; 09-28-2010 at 05:51 PM. |

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
There's an odd thing about DFW...
Folks from Ft. Worth tend to stay west of I-35, Dallas folk tend to stay east of that dividing line. I was born and raised in Dallas, and have only been to Ft. Worth for pleasure once or twice. I do bid'ness in the town of Keller as a truck driver but know little about it except for the fact it's a high cotton area with good lookin' gals and a Nascar speedway.... That said, there are a a bunch of good hangouts in the DFW area. Kellers, the drive in burger joint, has (or at least USED to have) multiple locations. May be one near you. I'm a biker so I tend to go over to Strokers and enjoy the beer and silicone on my off time. Anyway...welcome to the area. I'm glad to know that you and that good lookin' truck ain't in a high crime area. |

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
67 - 69 came with 2 mirrors, one on each door.
Then in 70, the inside one became standard, and I think the passenger side one became optional. |

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
As for MI, I called just before going on the streets & DMV asked what yr it was. I told them 1967 & they informed me that I have to have 1 mirror on the dr. side. Howard

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards No. 111, effective date 1-1-68, covers rear view mirrors for trucks and cars and buses. Vehicles manufactured prior to that date only had to have the outside mirror on the driver's side as well as the one inside. The passenger mirror was made mandatory with the 1-1-68 effective date.
If you can get by with only having one, or none, what difference does it make? As for me, I like having one on each side and the inside mirror, on my vehicles.

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
If you just want mirrors for a safety then I would do like someone suggested earlier and put peeps or a peep on pass. side if you need it, then take it off. They just clamp on the door frame, and look good in my opinion. Thats what I would have on mine if there wasn't some already mounted.

Re: Side Mirror Requirements
Ya I'm pretty sure almost everywhere you will only need a DS & a rear view. If you r rear view is obstructed by something you might need a PS mirror. I've found a general rule is if it came with it it has to have it, at least as far as safetys go.
