steering

Drove my truck around the block today, (first drive after installing v8/auto and noticed it has slack in the steering. It only had 58,000 miles, so it's hard to think the steering gears could be worn out. Is there any adjustment on the steering box to take out the slack, or do I need to swap out the box? It's a 60 GMC half ton.

Re: steering

There is a gearbox adjusting screw on the top of the box. Loosen the jam nut while holding the screw with a screwdriver.... Turn the screwdriver 1/4 turn clockwise then tighten the jam nut.

I would not do this however until you confirm that the play is not caused by excessive play in the linkage or other causes.

Stand outside the truck and move the steering wheel back and forth while checking for movement in the front tires. Do this while the truck is on the ground.

Re: steering

anything can wear out in 58,000 mi. if it isn't maintained. could also be any of the steering components. only tighten your box after you have eliminated all else. other things to look for are cracks in the frame around the steering box area and loose or broken bolts holding the steering box on. if you are to do the adj on the box, just do it in small increments and check the str wheel for free play in the wheel, you must have some. you may also have bad brgs in the box and aj won't help that
