Are '73s really worth this much?!
I was just given a nice '73 K20 for my birthday, I don't know how much it cost. I've had several '79s in the past but they were never worth more than a few hundred bucks.
Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how much I should insure it for, so I looked up the prices from NADA. They say it's worth $4200 "low retail" and $8800 "average retail", I'd say it falls somewhere in between there condition wise. That's a HELL of a lot more than I thought it would be! I compared it to my '79 and it's only worth $2000-4000 according to NADA. Is the '73 really worth that much of a premium over a later year? I know 73/74 are a bit unique...but then again so is '79. I mean, if I had a '73 and a '79 in the same condition, would the '73 actually be worth nearly double?! I don't understand... |

Re: Are '73s really worth this much?!
it all depends on the condition of the truck... if you post pics of yours on here you can prolly get a much better idea from us... there are some 73 trucks that arent worth more than a couple of hundred dollars and if its modded and mint well whatever the market will bear... i mean look at some of the befores and afters on those tv shows...

Re: Are '73s really worth this much?!
Right...but I mean in comparison to other trucks, of the same condition, does the '73 normally carry such a premium? I'm just curious why NADA says the same truck is worth roughly half in '79? I've never really thought of them as being much different than any other 73-80 truck.
I'll post some pics soon. I need to shine her up first. |

NADA might be going off of the fact that they are technically an antique. Where a 79 hasn't hit the age requirement yet.

That's the year for the emissions cut off in most places that test/inspect that stuff.

Re: Are '73s really worth this much?!
well 73 was the first year for the body style so im sure you can use that as a reason to bring up the value some

Re: Are '73s really worth this much?!
I'd pay more for a 73 than a 79 just due to Commufornia smog laws and I don't have to smog the 73. I bought an 85 and have been regretting not waiting to find a pre-74 as I still can't pass smog and the reg expired in June.
I think once I get around to changing all the vacuum lines I should be ok. Just waiting for the warden to allow yard time.

Re: Are '73s really worth this much?!
That would really suck to have to keep all the emissions stuff. That's what happened to my first '79, I stupidly bought an Arizona truck not even checking to see if it had the emissions equipment I needed. Never was able to register it before I had to get rid of it.
Recently I bought a commercial shop building and one of the reasons was to get an address outside the emissions boundry. I guess some of the guys I've been rolling my eyes at on craigslist aren't so far off...I'm used to shopping for old trucks in the 3 digit price range. The "new" one is so much fun to drive, it's my first without major issues! |
