am i a ratard or is something amiss when i pump gas?

ok so we all know that gas pumps have the little notches that you can set the handle to auto pump the gas so you don't have to hold it.

a couple weeks ago i thought i had found the 1 pump in anderson county that was messed up. well since then i've tried a couple other places and anytime i give the handle a full squeeze it kills the gas.

am i just having amazing luck finding all the jacked up gas pumps or is there something on the newer cars that allow you to hold the gas handle wide open to pump? cause holding the handle at 1/4 full and taking 5 minutes hunched over the side of my truck to fill up SUCKS!!!

Well depending on what you are pumping the gas into, all of the newer pumps have a sensor on them that when the moment they detect back wash or disturbed free flow, they shut off. They put metal rings around the nozzle that look like springs, use those to let your nozzle sit back a little way out of the hole and try it again or try to give it a little less than a full squeeze. I know it can be a pain cause it's slower, but it can come in very handy so you don't have gas everywhere...

well of course im pumping the gas into my truck! and the station i filled up with today is a brand new one so the pumps are fresh off the truck! thats why im wondering if there is something that the gas pumps don't like about my old tank

Do you have a vapor recovery canister? If so, it may be plugged and not allow proper venting of the tank, causing back pressure when filling up. Also, try turning the nozzle to the right (or left) to point it in the direction of the curve of the filler hose going to the tank. Don't put the nozzle all the way into the filler neck, which should help equalize air pressure in the tank. I have found a few gas pumps with long nozzles and no spring rings that work the best - but they always seem to be at the high priced gas stations. Also, when you find the best method to fill your tank, stop pumping when the nozzle clicks off - better to have the tank less than completely full than have gas slosh out of the filler cap or into the vent.

There's the winner. It's a venting issue, that's all. find the clog, remove it and your back to good.

Holding the nozzle upside down works well for me. Sucks standing there holding it, but it's just a little 16 gallon tank, don't take long.

Re: am i a ratard or is something amiss when i pump gas?

Filling up my truck when I first got it was a pure pain in the ass, gas would spit up everywhere and I swear more would end up on the truck and the ground then inside the tanks.
What I did was put a vent tube off the filler neck with a one way check valve. It kinda helps but what I have found best... Is to hold the pump (handle what ever its called..) completely upside down using the shut off switch wedged against the top and then hit the auto fill lever and just hold it by the hose till its filled.

Another pain is how low my truck is, so the filler hole is at my knees just about. I would have to snap a pic of how im trying to describe it because trying to write it out just doesnt sound right lol. Good luck!

Do you cram the nozzle all the way down into the filler neck? If so just trying pulling it out some. I have had this problem before on various vehicles and this has always fixed it.

I turn the filler nozzle upside down. It seems to work, for some odd reason. I think it's a placebo effect.

Yep that is what you have to do sometimes to relieve some of the built up pressure.

My '73 & '74 are both like that...but their fillers are from the days of leaded gas and I think the larger hole doesn't let it sit at the same angle the newer fillers are at thus creating the pump issues...or I'm just special as well.

My 87 does it if i put the nozzle all the way in, it will kick off in a couple of seconds. so i pull it back an inch or two and it works fine.

Re: am i a ratard or is something amiss when i pump gas?

I have done the upside down nozzle thing also. If you think about it, the filler hose takes a curve down to the tank. So, if you turn the nozzle upside down, then the nozzle follows the curve of the hose, and the gas does not splash directly against the downward curved side of the hose, creating back pressure and shutting off the nozzle. If you use a pump with a long nozzle, then the tip of the nozzle goes past the bend in the filler hose, and has a straight shot into the tank.

Re: am i a ratard or is something amiss when i pump gas?

Fuel nozzles do not shut off based on pressure . They shut off when the small 1/8" opening that is on the bottom side of the spout(tip of the nozzle that gets inserted into the tank) is covered or picks up a little liquid. As fuel passes through the nozzle , it creates a vacuum on the port and when it gets covered ,or obstructed ,it trips the nozzle latch and causes it to stop the flow of fuel.Turning the nozzle upside down places the small opening on the topside of the spout and it is less likely to be covered with the gas or diesel that is splashing back up the filler neck of the tank. That is why it takes gas better that way but it will be much less likely to stop automatically when the tank is full . I think if your truck is having a hard time taking fuel you should remove the rubber hose from the filler to the tank and check for obstructions. People used to install anti siphon devices to keep theives from stealing fuel. Those things cause problems sometimes. Newere vehicles have anti-rollover floats on the inlet of the tanks that sometimes stick and cause hard fill problems.I have had a couple trucks that were hard to fill and I have found something blocking the filler tube on each one .

Re: am i a ratard or is something amiss when i pump gas?

I have this problem as well, When I pump gas and let the nozzle just sit in there, the gas splashes off the neck and kicks the pump off, I have to hold it perfectly to get it to pump

Re: am i a ratard or is something amiss when i pump gas?

My '82 swb had the same problem, i had to hold it just right to pump gas, otherwise i would spend 10 minutes trying to pump $5 lol.

I was actually called retard by my friend once cause he was in the truck and kept hearing click off. He was like "retard, hold the handle down"
