Hood hinge issues

Why in the heck does the hood on this generation of trucks pop up 1" at the cowl after a fashion? ('73-80) Do the hood hinge springs work harden with use or something?

I have wondered about this, as my hinge mounting points are out of down adjustment and the hood just takes a lot of pressure to close, not to mention the number of these trucks that the hoods start folding in half gradually--------- will new hood springs correct this ?

Re: Hood hinge issues

I had the same problem, sucked it up and bought NOS hinges from Classic Parts. I kept my old springs, but the hood problem vanished with the hinge replacement.

Re: Hood hinge issues

gotta keep the hinges lubed from day one or they get tight... crud gets in there and if its not lubed up they get hard to operate

Re: Hood hinge issues

Mine do the same thing.....put some lithium goop on there and they open and close fine (still have the other problem) but It hasn't bothered me enough to buy new hinges yet....if I ever find time to go to a wrecking yard then I might get a "newer" pair but I'll probably wait till I can just get new hinges

Re: Hood hinge issues

The hood hinges have always been an issue with this generation. But you have two seperate problems here. The hood sticking up in the back is an adjustment issue, not really related to the lubrication thing.

Believe it or not, you are adjusting the hood hinges the wrong direction. I know, it seems crazy... but as you lower the rear of the hinge, you raise the hood, when it is in the closed position.

Lubrication is a huge factor in the smooth operation of these hinges. Here in the rusty midwest, they get stiff enough to kink the hood if you pull down too hard. There used to be a few companies making a stiffening brace for the bottom of the inner skin of the hood. It was a band-aid for an already kinked hood....or an ounce of prevention? I don't know if anyone still makes them though?

I've heard good things about the "band-aids" that fix the kinks and add some help in keeping them strait. LMC Truck still makes them.. Here's the link.. Bottom right picture.

Re: Hood hinge issues

I agree with Longhair i always found it to be a adjustment issue. But hinges must be kept lubed well also
