Removal of Stock Steering Column
Got everything stripped of to remove the cab but can't figure out how to get steering column out of box....or do I have to remove the box too?
Not sure how the steering wheel comes off either, wheel puller maybe??? Guess I need to get the factory assembly manual. Any input is greatly appreciated. Got the engine and tranny fitted up with crossmembers today and pull it back out. Hope to get cab off tomorrow. Probably have to start spending $ now. |

Remove the steering wheel. unbolt from bottom of dash. Take of drag link and pitman arm from box. If equipped with three on the tree remove all that stuff. Unbolt from frame and slide box and steering column thru firewall from fire wall side.

OK thanks. I get it...except I can't get the steering wheel off. I removed the horn cover, bolt and horn plate......is the wheel just supposed to slide up and off now?

thanks..........apparently I need a puller to get drag link and pitman arm off also??
things don't come apart to easily after 50+ years ! |

Sometimes you can use penetrating oil and apply a little heat and a pry bar between the frame and arm at the shaft and it will pop off. Oriellys, etc. will loan you a puller if you don't have one, I picked a variety up at estate sales over the years. Or looking at it, unbolt the box, put the nut back on the shaft flush with the end, push the box away from the frame until the arm hits the frame. Hit the end of the shaft pushing it and the box thru the frame pressing the arm off. Redneck millwrighting at its finest.

The steering wheel and front end joints are not meant to just slide off, even when they were new.

got it.......the local auto zone has used ones that they sell you then you can return for your money back any time.....kind of a free rental system.
kudos to auto zone. Got the cab off too............talk about backyard redneck engineering!! now let's see who it's gonna be today...Raiders or 49ers. |

Orrie, he's probably going to set the tv up in front of the cab in the patio and sit in the cab to watch the game Friday night. Like the drive in movies.
The "patio" was probably the carport before someone stuck that piece of lattice work up there. Looks like that if he put up a couple of sheets of vis-queen he could stay half way comfortable out there on sunshiny days. Last edited by mr48chev; 10-17-2010 at 11:02 PM. |
