NV4500 question
I have a 1992 Chevy NV4500 that i got ahold of and my question is, does anyone know if its even possible to convert it from 4WD to 2WD without a different output shaft or main shaft I guess, I thought I could just get a different tail housing but i haven't been able to find anything. I was wondering if you guys knew of anything that could help. Thanks

Re: NV4500 question
I'm not for sure, But i'm going to guess that you will have to replace the main shaft and get a 4x4 tail housing. I don't mess with the gas NV4500's unless it came from a V-10, so I could be wrong.

Re: NV4500 question
He is going the other way, from 4wd to 2wd. So I know he will need a 2wd tail housing, but I'm not sure what internals are necessary to complete the swap. Maybe see if someone with a 2wd tranny will want to trade you?

Re: NV4500 question
Whoops, I read it wrong. I guess it will depend on if you can find a yoke to go on the out put shaft. And then you would have to build a bushing retaining plate so the yoke yould have something to ride in like a stock 2wd tail housing. I know where there is a 2wd housing for a dodge nv4500 that could be purchased cheap if you're interested.

Re: NV4500 question
You might need to replace the output shaft. This will depend on whether the 4WD shaft has threads for a bolt or nut to hold the yoke on. You will know as soon as you get it separated from the transfer case.

Re: NV4500 question
If it is a 4wd out put, it won't have any threads for a nut. Just splines. But he should be able to use a yoke and slide it on the shaft if he can find one with the correct spline count. He might be able to use the stock 4x4 tail housing. What ever yoke he can find should slide into the seal like the input on the transfer case did. Then he will need to make a bushing retiner to provide some support for the yoke just like a 2wd tail housing would have. But I'm guessing you will need a slip yoke in the drive shaft if this is done because I don't know how much room there would be if you decided to try to make a 4x4 a 2x4.
