1974 C-10 Project - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I got a `74 C-10 I am restoring and want some opinions about certain things I want to do to it. Suggestions are good.

It has an Inline-6 engine w/ straight pipe exhaust (not dual) and no cats.

It also has a heavy duty suspention package for hauling. I want it tall and with wheels big enough to fill in the large fenders, but everybody says big wheels + 2wd = bad or that lift kits don't look right on a 2wd.... any Suggestions?

I had essentially the same truck in 1980, but I like 'em low....

Mine was a straight 6, three on the tree originally - I did fun stuff like dual exhaust, hot rodded head and intake, added a four speed Saginaw with a floor mounted shifter and a Sun tach on the column. Some other touches include a homemade hidden hitch with a flip up license plate and bed mounted spare.

If you really want to go crazy, we have in the past made our own 3x2 carb intake and installed three Rochester 1bbl carbs with a Pontiac progressive throttle linkage.

Great fun, and for not very much money.

I would keep it low, and look into 18's. The bigger or taller you make the truck makes it harder to work on things under the hood. I just sold the one in my avatar to the left because I couldn't stand working off a stepladder and worrying about scratching the fenders.

Looks like you have a fair amount of work to do before It can even be driven. Good rule of thumb, go through the vehicle and get everything working. From there, start customizing stuff. The extra work will pay off.

Actually, it runs fine. The only function not working is the the brakes. It mostly needs body work.

That's good! I wasn't just talking about the engine. I meant go through the lights, brakes, steering, and replace any worn/corroded/rotted parts that could jeopardize the safety of the occupants or other motorists.

About my exhaust.... I have a single pipe coming from the engine. It is completely straight w/o cats or muffler/glasppack. I love the sound (kind of a glasspack like sound) until it gets into higher RPM's, where it tends to drone slightly (simular to the rice burner sound, but lower tone). I want to get the tone lower during that slight drone. Should I use resonator tips, large bore tips, or what?

use a flowmaster resonator or some resanator from a newer model car from a junkyard. and as far as bigger tires, i have 33x12.5 R15 tires on my truck and i love em, stock height. you can use newer style lift spindles there are some threads around this forum about how to do it. ive got 4 inch lift spindles and i hope to put those on with some 35 inch tires. but i need to change my rear gears before i do that haha.

I've heard resonator tips will give it deeper tone....is that true? If so thats what I think I'll get.
