school me on BIG HUB dana 44's - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

well i was in the shop today cutting the old eaton rearend and closed knuckle 44 out of my 68 frame to swap in a newer axle set, 14 bolt FF and a gm 10 bolt....

after much thought i was throwing around the idea of just using the big hub dana 44 i have out my 71 but i know nothing about them, what is the strength difference between a 10bolt and a big hub 44??? the truck is being built for tug a truck on concrete in the 5000 and 6500 pound weight classes and want to use the strongest set up without a dana 60!

im going to be running 5.13 gears but dont know if anone offers them for the big hub's.

so please explain the differences in the 10 bolt and big hub 44 and which one am i better off going with...thanks alot!!

Don't 100% quote me on this, but I hear the Dana 44 is just a tad stronger than the 10 bolt. It isn't something highly noticed as it's just a bit stronger, so either way, you wouldn't be gaining much. Get a D60

lol i would love to run a d60 but it will put me over the 5000 pound weight limit and finding one for less than $1500 is bout impossible anymore.

The 10 bolt is a better axle. Any D44 or 10 bolt with the smaller internal hubs is stronger and more desirable than a 44 with those big external hubs. The old external design transmits the torque to the wheel through the bolts that hold the lockout assembly to the wheel hub. On the later internal hub design, the torque is transmitted through splines cut into the inside of the wheel hub. The internal design is stronger and better in every way.

^On paper.But in reality,you'll never see the difference.I've run 14.50/37 tires in some serious off road use and never sheared a hub bolt.I like the Dana rear design better than 10-bolt.Just a matter of preference.I like what came in these trucks to stay whenever possible.
What's the 5000# limit?Registration?That goes by the VIN,doesn't it?

no the weight classes are go off of drive on scales, same way as sled pullers weigh in. i want to be able to keep the truck it self as light as possible so i can use as much "movable" weight as i can, say if i need to move some to the bed from the weight rack on the front..

i have both a big hub 44 and a gm 10 bolt, just want to use the one that phyically stonger.
