1980 smog

hello well i finally got my truck, its a 1980 chevy truck. scottdale. c10 2wd light half ton.

will be posting in the projects section later this week.

i have a question regarding smog in California.

it seems the p/o swapped the engine out, from a inline 6 to a 350, however he did not put any smog back on the truck.

my question is what do these truck have on them, smog pump, canister catalytic converter, things of that nature, i have original exhaust but there pretty well toast,

if i could see some pictures of the engine bay and smog equipment i might know better what needs to be put back on.

thanks and i hope i get some quick replys

Re: 1980 smog

I got rid of all that emissions crap and there is a pretty good discussion in this thread http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=421869&page=2
dealing with what is needed for emissions in CA. The pictures are of my truck and I got rid of all that stuff.

Re: 1980 smog

ok well been looking at a few california member builds, it seems i am confused on whats what for these trucks, most of the 80's model truck dont have half the stuff ive been told they need, like smog tubes for instance, i was told i needed them, but i havnt seen a single truck here yet with them on there stock before engines?

heres a few of my engine bay,

i can take more if neccecary this is just an exemple, i have no smog tubes and not sure if i even need them. if anyone has pictures of stock engines with all the smog that would be great to look threw.

and thanks master lock your post help a little bit, just still not 100%

Re: 1980 smog

That's strange how they left the EGR valve on (although disconnected) but removed everything else. Where those alan head pipe plugs are in the manifold is where the gas recirc tubes would be

Re: 1980 smog

This is the pics of the E xhaust G as R ecirculation tubes on my two 87's, the whole reason I mentioned the EGR valve in my first unread post. Both trucks bypass the #4 & #6 cylinders. Why??? I can't answer that question. Hope this helps.

Re: 1980 smog

And more still...Keep in mind this is an 87 R3500 GMC (first pics) and an 87 V30 (Chevy 4 wheel drive) in the second pics. Not sure where the dividing line is, they seem to be the same under the hood.

so if my 1980 says AIR-EGR it has exhaust manifolds with smog tubes? im looking for oem manifolds and I see both with and without. can someone help? also do intake manifolds vary from year? I need to change mine to oem to pass smog and I found one for 454 but but it is from a 1969 off the intake stamp. I have a 1980 454. will any of these work? I dont know why the opening shapes vary.

Re: 1980 smog

yes i'm going to spend the money and roll the dice and hope it passes. New CARB approved Holley 650 to swap the 750 Holley, swapping the Wieland stealth intake to OEM (which i need help from the pictures), valve covers to stock, canister, distributor since the one i have doesn't have a connection for the tube that connects to distributor delay valve as shown in my emission sticker picture, the whole thing! cats from Magnaflow are CARB approved from auto zone which will run me 450. So I don't know if I need one or 2.

Total cost around $1500-2000 and hope I pass!!! I love cali!

Re: 1980 smog

thanks those pics helped me out alot, a few more questions now that Ive seen yours,

what is this thing, (red circled area)

the red one looks original but the black circled nuts look newish? should i only need three open?

ok and the black circled area with arrow and ? mark, should i have a oxygen sensor on my exhaust? so far i haven't been able to find one on my exhaust system anywhere. i do however have a cat on the exhaust system.

the red area have no holes? does this mean that the black areas are the only ones that need tubes?

Re: 1980 smog

I don't have any 02 sensors on my truck as you can see in my pic. The valve on the right side of the engine you circled i believe is called the Early Fuel Evaporation valve (E.F.E). At least that is what i can find in my 1978 Chevrolet service manual. Looking at your circled pics. It seems that maybe someone has changed exhaust manifolds (but I'm not sure). I've never seen a manifold with two outlets before, just 4 outlets for the air ram system.

Mine seem to also omit the #3 and #5 cylinders. Maybe mine is not California sanctioned? Doesn't matter to me, they will live and die here in Indiana. It does appear to me that you may have a NON Cali emissions manifold on the right bank though....

Re: 1980 smog

What you should do corey is contact your local smog referee. They can be a huge help when you need them. I found out from mines that my truck was a Cali built truck, and not a federal model. That made a big difference when restoring the truck back to smog legal.

Re: 1980 smog

The sticker on your core supports shows all of the smog requirements. This is what the smog shop will look at and compare your set up too.

mine is from the inline six.

i have looked at getting a new one from lmc just dont have the spare change at the moment to spring for one. maybe next month when bills and parts even out for my wallet.

as for the referee, dont even get me started with those people. i called them and talk to a "expert smog person" the only thing he would tell me was that i needed the smog to beable to smog my truck, i asked him if he knew exactly what i needed, he wouldnt give me a straight awnser, so i asked if he knew anyone that could point me in the right direction and told me he couldnt give me personal information about smog information. i think i just got a bad apple but i sure wont be talking to them anytime soon.

some time next week im gonna chat up a local smog shop that seems to be fairly popular, hopefully i talk to the right person and they will help me out.
