Timing?

Ok, exactly how hard is it and what is envolved in timing my truck. I had a guy that I was gonna pay to come to my house and do it (so that I wouldnt have to tow it) but I reckon he got busy. I know I need something called a "timing light", Im sure I can obtain one. what else? Is it easy to explain ...and do?

Thanks!

Re: Timing?

Have you got a points distributor or HEI? I have HEI and did mine and I gotta say I found it complicated....but then I am a bit simple I will say that you should be able to do it but explaining it is another thing. Here's my old post which should hep providing you have HEI.

Re: Timing?

have a pro do it, unless you feel like learing alot.

The bad thing is you can be too advanced by accident if your dont know what you are doing

Re: Timing?

That's no attitude. Easy thing to do. Give us a pic of your motor and we'll walk you thru it. That's what we live for.
And you'll have the satisfaction of saying you did it yourself.

geezer#99, Kidd-7, and VetteVet,

Can you guys offer some guidance on how to time an inline 6 engine? I'm no mechanic and haven't ever done anything like that before, but I recently picked up a 1970 C/10 with a 230 straight six engine and it's time to check and adjust the timing to get her running strong.

I've looked through the board here and online and there seems to be a lot of information about timing 8 cylinder engines but not much for the sixes. Is it much different? Can you walk me through the process? What do I need to show you in the pic of the motor?

Thanks!

Re: Timing?

I'd have to agree with geezer#99; its not that complicated; I had to pull my intake manifold and ended up with the timing 180 degrees off when it went back together. Need: timing light; distributor wrench & a Tach.

Re: Timing?

Use this post by Billa for guidance. It's at the top of the engine forum in the stickies.
