Flames through the CARB !!!
Guys and Gals need some help
Just tried starting a 383 storker project and the motor runs for about 3 seconds dies. Starts back up runs 2 seconds dies, then just cranks and flames come from the carb. Checked all wires and they are running correct. Setup timing to be 0 and went all th way up to 12 deg. Still doing the same. Getting about 5psi of fuel pressure. Pulled the bowl and foud #65 jets in the carb. My setup 383 stroker 280H Comp Cam Vortech heads Airgap edelbrech intake 4160 Holley Carb HEI dist. ALL new never ran. Please help me out, any suggestion on how to make the engine run and without flames.

Re: Flames from the carb
would the distrubuter play a role in the backfire. I picked this one up from a buddy and he was not sure what it went to. IT is a chevy HEI distributer and appreared to be the standard one

Re: Flames through the CARB !!!
It sounds like you have at least one valve too tight. Check that firing order one more time.
UPDATE: Merged, Please don't do this Quote:

Re: Flames through the CARB !!!
I would check the distributor's alignment for a start and then: Are you sure the rocker arms are adjusted properly? If they are too tight, then you could be getting backfire and the engine will not start.

Re: Flames through the CARB !!!
how do I check on the dist if its 180 out? Do I just spin it 180 deg and try it again?
I checked the rods prior to installing the motor and set them and had someone else check them who had done it before. They were good but Ill check again/ Carb is a new Holley 4160

Re: Flames through the CARB !!!
also to check if your distributer is out 180 degress take out the number 1 spark plug and the distribiuter put your finger in the hole and crank the motor untell you feel air blow out the hole then drop the distributer back in and it should drop right into the number one position and it should fire right up if all your spark plugs are hooked up right.
or it was something like that im shure if i told you worng some one will tell you the right way to do it haha. my brain is kinda a bit fuzzy i have not done it since i was 14 hahaha. Last edited by 80chevyshortbox; 11-14-2010 at 03:46 PM. |

Re: Flames through the CARB !!!
it's firing when the intake valve is open, presumably, so i'd flip the dist around and try it that way. Don't know about the jets in your bowl, that doesn't sound like an indication of a good build, but I can't help you there.

Re: Flames through the CARB !!!
A couple of things that I would do. (#1) bring the #1 piston up to TDC on the compression stroke. Then look at the balance and make sure that your timing mark is at the pointer. Next, check the distributor and see where the rotor is pointing. That will tell you is you are out of synch.
(#2) You said you chaecked your rods---OK---Now did you check your rocker arm adjustments for proper length. There is a trick to doing it on a cold engine, that inculdes rotationg the engine a couple cycles while you are doing it. You have to be careful that you don't compress the lifters too much.

Re: Flames through the CARB !!!
If you've been backfiring thru your carb there's a real good chance your power valve in your new Holley is ruptured.

Re: Flames through the CARB !!!
well kinda sad to say this.....
Looked at the engine last night..... well I left the washers on the carb studs and there was a huge gap between the carb and intake. I removed the washers and the truck started and ran ! Im stupid
