Factory markings
Well not sure if anyone can help me out or not. My 68 had factory markings on the fire wall until I scrubbed them off with the scotch bright pad. I do have one picture of the engine bay but i cant make out the numbers or letters. If i zoom in it gets blurry.
From what I hear its better to have the markings but back on the truck after its been painted. So in case i cant figure out what my original markings were. Can i just make up some markings ? |

Re: Factory markings
KC, I think the model number is on the firewall in grease pencil, passenger side. There are other numbers/letters also but I don't what they are. Here's a good Thread that has some good info and should get ya pointed in the right direction. Hope this helps. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=371947

Re: Factory markings
They were assembly line build markings...notations.It's neat to find them still there, because it shows originality of the truck. To put them back on is neat, but does nothing to indicate originality. To put just anything on there would be just silly,IMO.I had them on the cab I'm using on project "Poor Boy".I'm not going with the color on the cab so I stripped them and primed over the cowl.

Re: Factory markings
There's a whole plethora of people who get so into the restoration of their vehicle that there is also an aftermarket of tags/stickers/etc. for those people to attach to their coil springs, for instance. Markings on anything that would be pertinent or appropriate for the given make/model are part of that scene. Add to that, creating overspray on places that would have had it, as well as other items of detailing, and you have the restoration crowd wondering....is it original or is it a restoration?

Re: Factory markings
My 68 has some of the original markings on the firewall 821 I think. One of the typical marks is the model # on cowl area passenger side. Typically on driver's side there is a unit number of some type typically a three digit #, on my 71 it is the paint code a "460" which is black and white deluxe two tone. It also has A50 on the core support for bucket seats, it has 118 under the driver's seat which I have no clue and it also has engine L47 and the trans code. On the 4x4 it had "john" written in grease pencil on the gas tank, a stencil code on the frame and on the rear drive shaft, model code on cowl, 880 on firewall as well as the option code for 4 speed trans and the option code for the 350. It had YE9 on the head gate of the bed and the model number on the rear cross member just in front of the rear bumper. I tell you this because it represents the info as the truck passed down the line, a check list of materials complete etc. if I had to guess. In the case of "john" it went back as did everything else I found because it is cool. If john thought enough of himself the sign the tank, I figure he should stay. For a full custom do away with them, for anything else I feel they are a part of the truck and should stay if possible, they give them personality.

Re: Factory markings
There was a number on the last crossmember on my frame too. It was upside down. It could be read if standing on your head behind the truck. Seems like it matched the firewall numbers over the heater box. I'll have to dig out some pics. There was also a three digit number on the cowl vent box on the driver side. There was nothing in the hump area of the firewall directly behind the engine on mine. Don't remember anything on the bed front panel either. I took pics of pretty well all the writing I found on mine.

Re: Factory markings
All - as you have probably already surmised, the numbers pertain to model codes, option content and the build sequence number.
They can also be signed love notes, "running the numbers" (ie, gambling) and lunch tab calculations (...I'm serious...). They do vary from plant to plant, shift to shift and even between individual operators. By the way, my truck was build sequence number "87". K

Re: Factory markings
Okay, from what Kieth says....these markings could be a way to pass love notes between folks like they did in school. Whodathunkit? Then, my experience in an industrial environment says that people write on "things" for several reasons. I guess that having a continually-changing "tablet" would be a good reason to voice your opinions, etc.

In the Pontiac community, there is a lady named "Linda" that signed a bunch of glovebox doors than she built (we've discovered probably half dozen or so).

Re: Factory markings
Ok so i took a Very hard look and the fire wall where i scrubbed the number off and i can make out some of it but not all of it.
In the center of the fire wall its 541 _ _ _ then on the drivers side left its CE10934 B So the _ are the items i can't figure out, but i will just end up putting these number back up if nothing else. |
