step side bed question
I took the rear fenders off my 65 stepper to clean up/paint now going back on. I cant remember, was there supposed to be a fender gasket or felt between bed and fender? Seems like there was something there.
Thanks in advance, Greg |

Re: step side bed question
A piece of advice given to me by an old timer back in the 70’s was to never use commercial fender welt between the fender and body panels. Most brands of welt are made of some type thin vinyl or naugahyde material which has cloth inside. Over time the outer surface can break down allowing water to soak into the fabric core, creating a wonderfully moist environment for the creation of rust. Ever since being given that information, I’ve always substituted thin strips of solid rubber. I’ve used bicycle inner tubes, slices of truck inner tubes, and natural rubber stripping sold through industrial suppliers with equally good results. At one time solid polyurethane welting was available, but I haven't been in the market for so long I don't know if it's still available.
FYI - The 1960 Chevy Shop Manual doesn't indicate the use of welting at all. On page 14-52, under rear fender, it states: 5. To install fender, reverse the above removal procedure and use sealing compound between fender and pick-up box. Last edited by markeb01; 11-22-2010 at 06:03 PM. |

Re: step side bed question
Here's what you need. Try NAPA. I found this stuff between all of thew fender to bedside surfaces and where the front fenders meet the grille header panel on my '64 Fenderside.

Ynot, I used to live off Mayfield and Cooper, behind that church on the corner. I know your area well. Good luck on the truck. I used the welt and it was fine, although I do see what these guys are talking about.
