Those with 700R4 please read.

I have a 71 SWB I'm getting ready to put a 700 in this weekend. Do you have to drill holes in frame when moving cross member, or are there holes there that line up? Do you need the upper part of the cross member or can it be removed? Any other things I need to look at before proceding. Thanks for any help.

Been a while but I think that you have to drill new holes. Maybe one on each side lines up. Dang old age, CRS is getting worse and worse. I left the upper part of my cross member on. No bolts in it but still there.

I think that the 4 (two upper and two lower) back holes line up, so the fronts would need to be drilled. I didn't move the crossmember when I installed my 700, I came up with something else to compensate for the difference in length. I cut a 1/4" plate and mounted that to the crossmember, then set the transmission mount on that.

I think nightmare has the best answer on the crossmember. Bolt it to the existing TH400 holes, which will put it about 4" too far to the rear. Then bolt or weld an extension on it to reach the 700R4 mount. This way you will have plenty of clearance if you ever need to pull the pan.

I kept the original cross member and had to drill holes. I used a long, I mean long drill bit so I could go through the bottom hole and drill the top one.

You'll need a TV Cable too.... I bought a conversion kit when I did mine. This is what I used:

I had to shorten my driveshaft too...

Got the TV cable and dipstick, wired the brake light/low pressure switch. I need a tailshaft from a caprice I have been readig that it puts the mount in the same place as the 400, which is what I have now.

I just went and looked at my quadrajet and it has a extra mounting pi on the linkage. Would this work for the TV cable? Not sure if the geometry is corrct for the TV or it may have been for a 350 turbo tranny. Anybody else have 700 with qudrajet hooked to it?

Ok think I got it figured out. I done a little searching and figured out the new shaft I out in the carb has the correct linkage for a 700. Must have been from a early 80's car. So that's solved. Also found out a tail housing from a early 80's caprice has the mounting boss on it. Supposibly it is positioned at the same spot as the 400. We shall see come thurs. night or friday morning. Looks like it should be a fairly easy swap. If I remember I'll take the camara for pics.
