What manual tranny are you runnig

Im trying to get a parts list together for my 65, and would like to run a 6spd trans, i wanted to what you have and any probloms you had with it

I used a TKO 5 speed. I don't remember any major problems, but it has been about 10 years or so since I put it in. I had to have my drive cut down. (Actually I just had a new one made instead). And the shifter is far back, but I have bucket seats, so that didn't matter. The only thing I'd look at is where the RPM's are going to be when you're on the highway. A 6speed is going to be pretty low in rpm range and these trucks aren't very aerodynamic. You don't want to be so low in RPM's that you can't cruise in 6th gear and still use the throttle to pass someone without having to downshift. And you don't want to be lugging the engine just to run in 6th.--Jeff

I am running a T56 6 spd. 2:1 overdrive in 6th makes for fine cruising. 70 mph at 1700 RPM (3.73 rear gear). As Dark1 mentions you do need some horses.

Difficulties: New crossmember needed, Need to modify e-brake gimikus, shifter is way back so I had to move it forward to use the bench seat. That is a big job - see this link.

why a six speed. the 5th to 6th split is not very far, I looked about buy the TKO 6 speed but after talking with a few that had it went with the TKO 600 5 speed. with a .64 over in 5th... The 6 speeds are good for road racing and things like that .. most said that they would just skip shift it as the 6 speed thing got old and was more shifting than needed... dont get me wrong 6 sounds good to me only passing on what I gathered.. My 5 speed is more than enough and many times I skip shift as well.. if I am being lazy

just read through your swap, I ran a 413 stroker in a sand rail and used a Mefi computer and it is a 3 wire deal , your swap looks great I can see the time you put into it very nicely done!!!

The champion rad you bought what was the cost my stocker is still holding up well but have thought about upgrading as it is old .... no leaks yet but since I have it out might swap it.. does that company make one for a 62??

He has 2 row and 3 row for a 62 ($150 , $200). My 3 row really cools good. The fans never come on unless I let it sit and idle for a while in SC summer heat.

The reason for a 6spd is i travel about 40mi a day to work, so i thought a 6spd would get better mpg. As of right now i am getting parts together. I have a 72 350 4bolt that i would like to get 400hp---3.73 12 bolt rear end complete---now just looking for a trans. And if i can come up with some cash i found a guy selling a magna supercharger for $500

My TKO has the option of a big OD I am running a .64 5th gear, My engine is stout so I do not know how a little engine would fare but it is shocking to see the RPM's drop by almost 50%... Just a thought I know that there are many ways to get there. Even a 4 speed ( 3 with a OD) would get the job done you need to look at rpm DROP in that od gear or in the 5th and 6th ratio.. I have driven the vetts with the 6th and really did not see the point in my own opinion. But each to there own.. I choose to buy a trans that was very strong and had the gear ratio that I could choose. The TKO 600 was the ticket..

I live in the mountains so we run the gears alot and this has been a dream to drive... You could get there with a t-5 as well...... If you go the 6 spped route post it up... nothing like being different.... I am installing a 7 speed trans in my harley.. 6 speed is stock so one more to go >>

I am running a T-5 and am very satisfied with the results. It was a cheap easy install, but I would not recommend a T-5 if you have a lot of power, sticky tires, and like to thrash it.

i would love to have a T56 but I am swapping over from a saginaw 3 speed to a Saginaw 3 speed w/ OD. Also will keep it on the tree.

Yeah to get good mpg with a carb'd V8, 1800rpms at 70 is the tallest I would go, as anything less is lugging it. Some guys with the 6 speed would actually get slightly better mileage in 5th gear.

Thats my next winter project for my 64, swap the 3 on the tree for a T5. That is, if I end up keeping the 6 banger in her...

Well I vote for a 4 speed. I run a saginaw 4 speed out of a 77 vega, and my rear is 3.73. At 70 it runs at 2400 rpms but has tons of power and still fun to drive. The swap was very easy. The original 4 speed bell housing bolts right to the Saginaw. The bellhousing basically is the mount, so no need for a new crossmember. I have a hurst shifter, and a bench seat. It took a little bit of modifying to mount the shifter to the tranny, but very little. It clears the seat with no issues.

You must have a 3.08 rear gear with rpm's that low at 70 mph.

TKO-600 5 speed is awesome.Shifter can be relocated(pricey,but can be done).It turns @2100 at about 70 mph with a 3.90 ratio and 27" tall tires.What little time I got to drive it before the teardown I had a blast!Pics show it with the mid shift relocation sitting beside a saginaw 4 speed,what a difference!Also,it wouldn't clear my low hump tranny cover.

Well I'm sure its 3.73 rear. It could be my tire size making the difference. I don't remember what size they are. Ill check when I get home. I stuffed the tallest tires I could on it.

Wow, bunch of ball busters. Ok I'll get technical and revise my statement. I went home drove my truck to 70mph it reads about 2550. I looked at the paperwork for my rear. Its a 10.5" 14 bolt corp with 3.42 gears. Sorry for the miss leading. 4th gear on a saginaw 4 speed is 1.00. tires 265/75/r16 by my tape measure shows they stand just shy of 31". So by my calculations my speedo is about 2 mph slow. So it's still not to bad, and fun to drive. Not to mention that those transmission are a dime a dozen. Easy, fun, and affordable. You can get a rebuilt one for $500 or less. The only other tranny in this price range is the T-5. T-5 can barely handle a mild 350. If you dont have deep pockets consider the 4 speed.

So with that combo, do you have to slip the clutch much on take off?

If it's cold it takes a little effort to get it going. when it's up to temp it doesn't seem to have any problems. I'm not sure what my first gear ratio is.

I wasn't trying to affend anyone with the busting balls coment. Just thought it was funny. I better make sure I know what I'm talking about on here. You can get called out in a hurry.

My truck is 3/4 ton with the rear axle, and front crossmember out of 80 chev.
I went with the bigger tires because I just like the way it looks.

I did move mine up to the front location and at the time it was 500 or so extra now you can buy the trans with shifter in the forward location. THe mid location is too close for how I wanted it. But it can be done that way. By the way I do have all the parts for the mid and rear location if someone needs them for what ever reason.

Three gears is all you need son. I rebuilt my Saginaw myself. There weren't but about three parts in the thing! I'd love to find one near me with an overdrive though. Keep that shifter on the tree unless you want your girl sittin' on the other side of yer cab. Then again...shiftin' between her knees might be fun!
