Trucks being a dink....

So since i bought my truck a few months ago i have replaced pretty much every typical "Maintenance" part right down to the starter and alt. so tonight went out to pick up a new washer and dryer and got to the peoples house and loaded the stuff up and went to leave and the truck slowly rolled over but wouldn't fire so buddy bosted me and we were on our way home. lights seemed a little bit dim but nothing really to bad.

So got home turned the truck off than tried to fire it right back up (no go)
so i unloaded the washer/dryer and than went out and boosted the truck so i could get it away from the door

parked in its spot turned it off (the dash lights and head lights seemed a bit brighter) so i tryed starting it fired right up did it about 6 times and fired right up.

trucks been sitting about 10-15 min now (i'm going to go see if it still will start) *runs out side * started to roll over than made a crunch noise and rolled over really really slowly... this is leading me to believe it's the batt... but it's not doing the clicking noise when i roll it over that a dead batt usually does.

Sorry this is a long post. i was just hoping i didn't need to buy a batt this close to Christmas.

Check your connections. It happens to my truck when I hook up the battery and its not tight enough or something.

Re: Trucks being a dink....

check your connections for sure when I first got my 76 running I pulled it into the shop to put the motor for the blazer in the back shut it off because I was going to be there for a little bit and when I went to start it it cranked but not fast enough to start hooked battery charger up and started like the battery was fine drove me crazy for a week it would do it only sometimes not specific (hot or cold) finally double checked connections and what do you know a loose connection at the starter haven't had a problem since

Re: Trucks being a dink....

I'm sure it has some kind of warranty if you bought it from a parts store. I replaced the starter on my 81 lwb several times before I got a good one from the autochain stores. Good luck.

Re: Trucks being a dink....

Had this happen to an Advance Autoparts brand new starter I put into a GMC s10 Jimmy. Took it back to the parts store and they replaced it at no charge. The counter guy told me they have a lot come back like that because they use such cheep plastic. Good Luck.

Don't do snow! It's 47 degrees here and I don't think I am going anywhere near my garage tonight.

Re: Trucks being a dink....

I had a similar problem after my truck sat for a while. Truck wouldnt start and only turned over real slow. Here the starter gear was stuck in the fly wheel and wouldnt release. After I got it unstuck it has started ever since. Makes a funny noise now and then but it doesnt look like its damaging the fly wheel so I guess I'll just run it till it dies. I should probably carry a spare. lol

it cost me 20 bucks for them to put a new cap on as apparently it's my fault "i over tightened it" months ago and it decided months later to give up the ghost,,,

Re: Trucks being a dink....

so got the starter in and all but ran out of day light so tomorrow i have to solder the start power lead back together. not a big deal just ran outa light.

but for fun i hooked the cable up by just twisting them together (temporarily) to see if the issue was gone. still turned slowly but i could hear it sparking to the block. (lol bad idea i know) so i'm hoping tomorrow when i hook the wire up the connection will be better and it will work again if not...

Where do i go from there? all the connection points are clean and tight.

Re: Trucks being a dink....

This is after i took the starter back. and i watched him bench test it. i'm going to assume it's the batt as the alt is new the starter is new the connections are clean etc.... But my question is why are the lights still quite bright? and why dosn't the starter "click" like on other vehicles?

yay new batt for x mas :S

Re: Trucks being a dink....

When the battery on my truck got ran down this year, it wouldn't click either. It just sat there making no noise at all. I put the battery on trickle charge of 2 amps overnight and then it started right up. I would try the battery also and see if that takes care of it. Good luck!

yeah boosting it fixes it (it will start ) but it will some times re start and some times not :S i might just bite the bullet and put a batt in it. when yours was going bad were your lights still pretty bright?

Re: Trucks being a dink....

Yeah the lights stayed bright even though the battery was junk. Fortunately, the alternator is new and puts out a good charge. I still haven't got the battery setup I want in it, but that will come soon hopefully. I want to run 2 batteries with an isolator between them so they cant do a mutual discharge to one another. That way if one goes bad, I still have the other one to run the truck.

I would go redtop Optima. They are built for quick discharge bursts, great for starting trucks and running stereos. The yellow tops arent bad either, they are just a longer discharge time.

That's awesome! Glad that took care of it for you. I understand about the wife not letting you get the more expensive battery. Mine tends to throw a fit when I spend to much on a hunting trip that she thinks is pointless.
