SB Motor Stands in right place?
I am finally starting to work on my truck. It's a small block automatic truck that I bought with no motor or transmission. The PO told me he had a small block with a 700r4 transmission in it. I have a mid 70's 350 with a TH350 out of an impala. I was looking at the engine stands and they look strange. they seem too far back and the hole in them looks like it's been hogged out. I know I may have to move the crossmember to put in the TH350, but want to make sure averything else is ok. Can someone tell me if they look ok, and if they are in the right place? I am attaching pictures.

They should be mounted in the forward 2 holes on the frame and the forward hole on the front end crossmember. WES

Look to be in the right spot. Someone wallered out to holes because the engine can be a bear to line up sometimes and the aftermarket motor mounts aren't always the best fit. So instead of taking the ill fitting motor mounts back and exchanging them, they wallered out the holes to make them fit. (I would change the brackets if it were me.) WES

I had trouble getting those bolts into the engine mount also. So I disconnected the towers from the frame and bolted them to the engine mounts and engine first. Then I use some tapered rods to get the towers lined up as I lowered the engine. Much better.

The holes are hogged out pretty big, but as big as the washer is that goes under it, I doubt that it will cause any problems. I have seen the same poor fit issue on aftermarket mounts, & usually drill the holes in the stands out to 5/8" whenever the engine is out of one of these old trucks. crazyAl

To get them to line up I leave the tower bolts loose then jack up the engine a little, get the engine mounts bolted to the towers, then tighten up the towers. Seemed to work well.

this is generally my approach - get all the bolts in and started, then tighten stuff down.

But , who wants to play with the top & bottom bolts on the tower, on a motor mount swap? It should bolt out/in, no hassles. crazyAl

Thats why i drill the holes in the stands from 1/2 to 5/8"
