cab weight??
ok so my 72 gmc gets to have its turn in the garage soon and i wanna lift the cab off the frame to perform the rust repairs. what i was thinking of doing was getting some pulleys and a winch and lift the cab off the frame that way. the pulleys would be supported by the ceiling beams in the garage (i have an attic space in the garage) and the winch would be bolted to one of the walls. i was thinking of using 4 pulleys to distribute the weight evenly so i can get the cab up off the frame far enough the get something like saw horses under the cab to support it. so how heavy is an a/c auto cab with the tank and bench still in the cab?

I think your going to need a single pulley to get it to lift straight. you can mount the pulley directly above the cab, and then hook it to the rafters using 4 separate lines. you need to make sure you have clearance above the cab, you will have a lot of loop above the cab
I do not know what a cab weighs, but I think 250 pounds is very conservative

I would plan on about 4 foot of space for the pulley and cables. I have lifted cabs outdoors, I think your not going to have room indoors with a pulley. the problem is the cable has to span the width of the cab, and it makes a V above the cab. you need a way to seperate the cables, and your 4 pulley idea might actually work better now that I think about it, assuming you can make it so all 4 lift evenly

well i might just have 4 feet to the ceiling rafters. but i figure 4 pulleys so i can distribute the load evenly so i don't pull the bolts out of the rafters with one pulley. about the only thing that i would really to make sure of is having all 4 ropes/ends at the end come up even. but i will have to see what i can come up with. the biggest reason for wanting the 4 pulleys aside from weight distribution is i don't know if i have a rafter that will run straight through the middle of how i part my truck in the garage. i'll just have to take a look when i get home tomorrow. right now i'm down in jacksonville florida for pilot/aircrew training. i'll let ya'll know what i come up with after i get home. i'll have 2 days off so i'll see what i can get to work. and if this does work then i might be able to use it for taking the bed off too!

when I lifted a cab, I used a single lift point and it took about 10 foot from the I beam to the ground to have room to clear the frame so I could roll it out. I looped a strap through the window opening and used a 2x6 laid flat across the room to keep the strap from damaging the cab.

ok. well i don't plan on rolling the frame out. just lifting it 1-2 feet from the frame so i can work on the underside of it so i can replace the cab mounts/supports

I would think that even 400-lb estimate is on the shy side. The glass is heavy. Lifting the cab w/o the doors is how we lifted one that I got. You gotta get the windshield/firewall closer to the lifting device, or that part will tilt downward if you are lifting like I did with a 4x4.

you should have seen the entire picture. i took the cab off the truck on the left first, it was junk. they I rolled the chassis with a good cab up until the front bumpers touched. I did this by myself, using a 72 3/4 ton to push and pull. I chained the front bumpers together. then I lifted the cab up, and pulled both trucks at the same time. set the cab down on the good frame, and shoved it back in the parking spot. I took that picture when I stopped to rotate the cab

if the box is off the frame it might b alot easier to just lay the cab on its back than lifting it up/or if motor and front clip is gone tip foward onto firewall
