1955 C3100 1st series
I have a question for the board. Attached is a picture from the truck i bought. I am wondering why this person cut around the outside of the radiator frame, then cut the frame in half only to weld back a piece??
I did notice that the radiator was mounted on the outside of the frame. I thought it would go inside the radiator bracket? any comments on why this was done? |

Re: 1955 C3100 1st series
Part of the fun of buying an old truck, trying to figure out why some po did what they did, LOL.
I think in your case he needed a radiator and had access to one that didn't fit. Rather than spend money on fixing or replacing the original one he just made the free one fit. Generall speaking, appearance wasn't a consideration. |

It looks like a crow bar in the picture, is it just hanging there?
Something I have said many times to my students;Common sense didn't play a part in your decision to do this did it?

Re: 1955 C3100 1st series
The 235 engine was put into the trucks in 54 and up. In its stock configuration, the water pump was longer than the original 215's...
Throw together some beer, a NEARLY identical engine with more power, and a cutting torch...and it became one of the most popular modifications for these trucks...

Re: 1955 C3100 1st series
Who knows. My guess is the cuts were made to fit a different radiator in place. The fan on these is tet tight up against the radiator so from this angle it is not possible to tell if there was an interference.

Fosheec,
ok, how did radiator assembly come out of the factory then with the 235 in 54and above if it was too long? |

Re: 1955 C3100 1st series
I believe (somebody correct me on the year if I am wrong...) that the rad support design changed in 54 and up...moving the radiator out just enough.
