how big of a cam?
im building my first mud truck its going to be a 80s shortwide that im converting to a 4x4. i have a 44 for the front and a full floater 14bolt for the rear. i have a engine im building but not tranny or anything yet. i plan on running a 6in lift or so and 35in boggers. now this is going to be driven on street but not often and going to be for mud, now the engine im building was for a s10 that i have but not going to finish it and selling the truck. its a 383 with 6in rods and forged pistins and trick flow 195 heads the compression is 10.5-1 and the cam i have for it is a solid roller lunati and the duration at .50 is 248 and the lift is 555. now i plan on running a stall but i dont want to go over a 2200 or so and this cams rpm range is 3k-6600. im sure this is gonna be to big for this but wanted to see what everyone thought about it. i would like to keep solid roller cam setup and just get a smaller cam but i cant find one that i think would work good. i also thought about selling my solid cam and lifters and just getting one of those hyd flat tappet extreme 4x4 cams from comp but not sure. just let me know what u think and im open to any sugestions. sorry about my grammor not good at spelling and never took keybording so my skills are not that great ha ha ....thanks bryce

Re: how big of a cam?
Unless you plan on towing a trailer, I would not be afraid to run more stall. I drove my truck every day for a while with a similar motor (383 dart 200cc heads 10.2:1 compression, 240-250 @.050 cam). I had 4.10's, 35's and a th350 with a 4500 stall nitrous converter in it. It would flash to 4500, but would pull almost any hill at 2500. I loved driving that thing. It would suprise a lot of poeple at stop lights when it lit up the 35's. It never heated up the fluid or gave me any trouble. In the mud when you get down in it, you need to spin the tires quick. Its hard to do with a low stall converter.

Re: how big of a cam?
If this is not going to be a hard core bog truck that you are going to play with for hours upon hours, don't be afraid to get a big stall without a dedicated cooling system. Just put a gauge on the outlet line to the trans cooler and be mindful of that.
I am trying a new of converter this time around in my truck. It is a 3000 stall boss hog. The 4500 converter went back in the camaro. Lynn |
