Uh Oh!!.. Slipping.

I was driving home from the College today and when trying to leave the parking spot I was in, It took awhile for transmission to engage in reverse. It works fine in drive, but there is a big hesitation when trying to move in reverse.

Could I be loosing my tranny? I changed out the fluid, and replaced the gasket about 6 months ago, and have had a
slow leak after sitting for while. The fluid always reads full though?

Does anyone know what might cause the slip or hesitation?
How can the dipstick always read full, when I have been leaking forever?

I was thinking maybe the stick is too long???

Confused??

What did your transmission pan have in it when you replaced the gasket and filter? This was six months ago, and it just started slipping now? Do you smell anything? What about slipping after you're in gear and you've driven down the road a bit? How does upshift, downshift, and detent behave?

It was good, just wanted to the replace the gasket. Other
than the slipping in reverse, I have never had any other
problems?

It doesnt seem to shift hard, and kicks down when I need
it to? I did hear a pop when I kicked it down once.

The fluid looks fairly red, maybe a little more towards the
gold side?

Mine does the same thing, it even slips when in gear. It also takes forever to upshift sometimes too. I have to let off the gas to get it to shift. But I know mine is going.

Could be you have some gook in your valve body. When you replaced the gasket and fluid, you maye have knocked some sludge loose and is now in you passages. If you don't mind taking it apart again, you could remove the valve body and make sure it's clean. Other than that, I would say you may be loosing the reverse band/clutch. Not good, but how often are you in reverse anyway.

When I had my TH-350 installed, it had no forward gear, but would go all day in reverse. When it was taken apart, it was discovered someone had put a small amount of sawdust in the fluid to get it to drive into the junkyard. After it sat for a while, it got hard, and wouldn't go anymore. Bummer for me.

The tranny in my 82 GMC did the same thing. It crapped out on me about 6 months later.

The gold you see in your fluid is not a good sign...I'd drop the pan and replace the filter once more....but it is probably on its death bed.

Gold is results from varnishing of your friction plates. Time for a rebuild, and I'd do it before your transmission decides to rebel completely. You don't want to damage anything.

Could anyone tell me the fluid capacity of the stock turbo 350
in my truck??

The last time I emptied it there wasnt much there, but the stick read full.....

I am going to drop the pan, and inspect the valve body and filter and want to make sure I refill enough, but not too much.
