No frame vin numbers question

OK, I have a very original truck and was going to take it to get inspected in morning BUT I tried to find vin numbers by ps box on top rail of frame and I can't find any. I have 2 other trucks here and can find them on their frames. Its a 72 chevy truck, where are the other set of vin number on frame, I was thinking there was another set on top rail under cab but what side? Any help is appreciated. Thanks Randy

Re: No frame vin numbers question

Well here in Kansas the highway patrol have checked the frame every time I had one inspected. They are now doing it at county sherriff's department and I know most of them over there so hopefully I can get it through BUT this is the Eagle truck and I would like to be able to say everything matches if I ever resale it. I've only had 2 other trucks in all my years not have one on frame one was a 67 gmc and the other was a 72 swb 4x4. I may have to try to get a mirror and see if I can find them under cab. Thanks Randy

Re: No frame vin numbers question

I usually see the vin by the steering box and the pass side under the cab. Many GMC trucks have no frame vin at all.

Re: No frame vin numbers question

I have seen only one or two trucks that did not have the # on the rail by the PS. This is a 72 frame if it helps. You can barely see the #'s in the one pic.

all the vin's I've ever seen have been on the drivers side, like you said by the ps on the top of the frame rail and on the frame rail under the cab.

Re: No frame vin numbers question

Randy I have had several trucks inspected here in NC and the inspectors never looked anywhere except on the vin tag. Do your inspectors know to look at places other than the vin tag on these trucks?

Re: No frame vin numbers question

In Missouri, you can buy a lifetime license plate for anythig older than 25 years. No inspection. Supposed to be historic with restrictions and supposed to carry a log. Had one for 15 years and never been checked. A local judge ruled that the restrictions weren't legal.

Re: No frame vin numbers question

Every state is different. I've had a bunch inspected in Kansas. Once they are titled in Kansas, you don't have trouble dealing with Kansas, just pay tags and taxes every year. Unless you want a antique tag, pay for it once.

True, however North Carolina DMV requires any vehicle 35 years or older that is purchased from out of state be inspected by a member of the Highway Patrol-License and Theft Bureau. I had to do this with my truck because I purchased it from Virginia. The DMV will not issue the title until this is completed. The Inspector who checked my truck got the VIN off the cab, and the frame and took pictures of both as well as pictures of the outside of the truck. He then ran the VIN to confirm it was not stolen.

As a side note, there is a lot of dispute over this "rule", because it is something the DMV implemented on their own with no legislation a couple of years ago. There was a bill proposed last summer to remove the rule, but I do not believe it passed.

What kind of inspection is this? Kansas doesn't have a safety inspection. Is this some kind of rebuild/road worthy inspection?

Any out of state vehicle that you try to register in KS has to be inspected and they are very picky.

Re: No frame vin numbers question

Kansas does have a inspection for out of state cars and trucks when you want to title them in Kansas. They check vin plate, title, frame, spid label and build sheet if you have it. Vin, title and frame have to match.

Good deal Randy, did you get a radiator and get her running? Make friends with the guys at the sheriffs office, I know of an old car from Nebraska that I might have to sell you cheap...

Re: No frame vin numbers question

Heck,"I've" never even checked any of my trucks for the numbers on the frame.I wouldn't know if any of the many trucks I've owned had the number or not.I know they were never checked and I thought Maryland was tough. They seem to care less on older stuff than late model.Good luck with it.It appears that some never got stamped.I know if they've been ground off (theft) the numbers will show up if you heat it with a torch.
It's amazing how different states are with this stuff.I just transferred a title to on a truck I have to Maryland from California at the DMV.The truck isn't even present. They just wanted a bill of sale and a signed title. Now I have a Maryland title and when I go to tag it it will be looked upon as an "in state" truck.

Re: No frame vin numbers question

Kansas is tough, they consider anything from out of state stolen until the inspection proves it isn't.

Re: No frame vin numbers question

The picture Jason has above was very helpful and was exactly where my number was. By the way the frame number was an abbreviated VIN. Rather than the full VIN (CCE142B######) it only has the last 8 characters (2B######).
