Re: worthless in snow....

So....are you in Texas, or are you in Montana?

My '65 C-10 LWB had a set of M&S tires on it that taught me that a narrower tire will sink more deeply into the snow and bite better than a wider tire. My '96 Sportside GMC has 275-60's on the back and they just sit on top of water (hydroplane) and they don't dig into the snow enough to make the effort worthwhile. So, I'll put some chains on the wifes' Lexus...when the time comes. The '69 ain't going anywhere in the snow unless it is on a trailer or a rollback....

My grandfather was a Model T Ford fanatic. Talk about great in the snow, the 4 inch wide x large diameter tires on those Model T's would walk right through snow and mud.

Sometimes moving forward means looking back?

they used to have cool conversions that did away with the front wheels and mounted a pair of skis on the spindels// my uncle had one on his farm that he used to pull us kids around on our sleds

I agree. There are certain advantages of a tall narrow M+S tire versus a low profile wide street tire when it comes to M+S (MUD and SNOW). Before 4X4's got super popular, it was common for 2WD pickups in rougher climates to always run narrow M+S tires on rear and highway tread on front. What tire size do you presently have on the rear?

Re: worthless in snow....

I love my truck, but my Grand Cherokee 4x4 is my snow vehicle. In the 11 years I've owned it, I haven't found enough snow to slow it down, and it's been through over a foot of snow many times.

Re: worthless in snow....

my daughters Jeep was the same way. I couldn't believe it, a Jeep "Renegade"....tho its just a Liberty model...in a 2wd, with a non-posi rear axle. A Jeep?

Anyway....just took care of it tho as she's headed to Colorado for a while...added an OEM type (made by Spicer) positraction to the Jeeps 8.25" Chrysler rear and re-shod it with one size up oversized Geolander AT-S tires. Its still not a 4x4... but the upgrades were cheaper then selling her Jeep and buying something else and should handle most situations. If she needs more...she can get a cheap set of wheels and a set of tires fitted with spikes.

Yup -- the last 2WD vehicle I owned went away nearly 16 years ago.

Re: worthless in snow....

snow tires proper pressures ballest and knowing how to drive and common sence will get these trucks down the road in snow

always cracked me up to see 4X4's wrapped around trees and upside down during snowstorms due to bad drivers with that false sence of security

Yup, I have to agree here. I haven't had even a single "un-intentional" slide-out,(and my 'baby' has some very unstock-horses under the hood), in my C20, and I now live in Montana.

But I also grew up learning how to drive in the snow in N-IL.
(When I was much yonger, one of my favorite pranks to play on someone used to be; pouring a small cup of very cold water over their tires in the morning when they first parked in a snow-bound spot. It would most times freeze into ice before noon and lock the vehicle in place. (Kinda like sticking your tongue on frozen metal and trying to get it back off without melting the instant ice first...)

Michael

P.S. Does anyone make a "Half-Track" conversion kit for these Chevys yet? I've been thinking of going up into the mtns to get some more firewood...

Merry Christmas!

Re: worthless in snow....

Well, I can say that is pretty true because of my 71 c-20. It isn't supposed to be my winter or bad weather vehicle but my winter car is waiting repair so the GMC get driven and does a bit of spinning and fishtailing in the process. about 500 lbs in the back helps a lot though.

The photo was take with my camera two days ago at work. Three inches in three hours.

Re: worthless in snow....

I prefer an open rear in the snow personally.
Something about the longhorns.. it seems they suck in anything resembling slick conditions. My suburban and my old SWB GMC were awesome in the snow/mud compaired to either longhorn I've had.

Re: worthless in snow....

I don't even try to drive my old trucks in snow. When I was growing up in this country we never had a 4 wheel drive and had no problem with getting stuck in the snow.

If it snows now or we have ice problems, I park all my vehicles except my '86 4Runner or '92 K-3500 dually.

During the "Ice Storm of 2009" I even had to take the 4 Runner though the field to get to the road because our driveways were blocked by downed trees.

I would really like to find a swb 4 wheel drive drive someday in the '67-72 years.
