Dwell angle on 350 SB
My 69 350 SB engine was running a little rough, so I checked the plugs and they looked normal. I then tried to adjust the dwell angle. My shop manual says it should be between 29-31 degrees. I could only get it down to 34 degrees. If I adjusted the points either way, it would go up & over 40. Does this mean my points are worn? I also checked the timing and it was at 2 degrees BTDC. My manual doesn't list the correct timing specs, it says to look at the Vehicle Emission Control Information label in the engine compartment...well, my label is long gone. Anyone know the correct timing for my engine? I still have the original smog pump hooked up.

Your breaker gap should be .019 (points) 28-32 should be the dwell angle. Timing should be TDC on standard trans, 4 degrees with an auto trans. hope this helps.

You ever thought of installing an HEI dist. ? You'd never have to deal with any of the dwell/points/adjusting stuff again.

man, I thought I was old-fashioned, I would love to help you out on that one, but I've never touched a points dizzy, do yourself a huge favour and drop an h.e.i. in there, it'd be the simplest single improvement and best bang for your money. It'll start quicker and run smoother guaranteed plus you won't have to ever worry about points and condenser again. But if you really want to keep your truck all original then keep it.

Put in a new set of points and a new condensor. Then set to 30 degrees with a dwell meter. Then set the timing.
Nothing wrong with points if they are changed every 12,000 miles and kept adjusted.

I put a pertronix ignitor in my truck. Got it from Autoworks out of Cali. The sticker on my air cleaner says timing should be 6 degrees btc.
