Best Tires For 1 Ton: On and Off Road- Already Searched

I have a 1984 GMC Sierra 3500 single rear wheel 2wd Pick Up Truck that I restored last year. I used to use Goodyear Wranglers in the past but did not like how long they lasted so I changed to Bridgestone Revos.

I currently have 2 Original Revos and 2 Revo 2s.

In the spring, I need to buy 2 new tires. I will keep the Revo 2s.

I have read on here alot that people like the B.F Goodrich All Terrain ATs.

Which tire do u guys suggest for me? I wont use it for mud but I want a rugged tire bc at times i use the truck for construction work and drive on gravel and such. But I also drive on the highway alot.

Should i stick with te Bridgestone Revo 2s or go with BF Goodrich. I usually buy from Tire Rack and the BF Goodriches r considerably cheaper in $$$ than the Bridestones. The Michelins r very expensive.

Ok, after some reading and researching, i ve narrowerd down my choice to 2 tires: Michelin LTX AT and BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO.

At Tirerack, the michelins are on special for $154 and the BF Goodrich are $114.

Its a tough choice. Please hlep

I personally like the bfg A/T in a load range E. Just my opinion, but I also cant give you any wear ideas because I havent had a set long enough to check.

I think you need load range E for sure, with a 1 ton. The BFG commercials I have now on my 83 C20 are holding up well and give a good ride, but are not very aggressive tread for offroad use (tend to not grab real well when I go through mushy terrain at the local dump). Still, if most of your travel is on road, I would not buy an aggressive tread. I had excessive wear on one tire due to a bad lower A arm, but that was not the tire's fault. The sidewalls are showing weathering but in AZ after 6 years of deseert sun I think every tire will show its age. If I use 303 Protectant on the tires every few months the weathering is kept to a minimum. After 20K miles the tire tread shows very little wear. I got a set of 4 BFG commercials at Costco back in 2004 for $420 complete installed, so that was the best price around at the time. Costco has rebates often, so I would check them out.
I usually buy a new truck or SUV every 6 months, so I have seen a lot of different truck tires, and I think the Generals give the best ride and handling of all the factory tires. The stock 17" Generals I have on my current 2010 Sierra 1/2 ton Ext. Cab ride, handle, and brake the best of the brands I have had so far. Goodyear Wranglers always seem to have a lot of bumps on the sidewalls which I think does not look very nice - I would never buy Wranglers on that basis.
I would make sure that you get steel valve stems on your wheels, if you don't already have them. In my part of the country, the rubber stems dry out and crack quickly.
I find keeping the air pressure at 50 lbs. works best for me, since I never know how much weight I will be carrying.

Agreed....If the truck is going to sit a lot dont put the Michelins on it though...the will dry rott before you wear them out.

My buddy always ran BFG AT`s on his trucks year round, incl plowing. He switched to Goodyear Silent Armours about 3 yrs ago, 1st set great, second set sucked, crappy ride, had 2 tires warranteed. He then switched to the Michelin`s LTX and loves them, says they plow better, balance better, and handle better than all prev tires. I have a set of 1st gen MTR`s on my plow truck, good so far, but I think they may be to hard for plow tires, and they kinda sucked in the rain on my Jeep.

The new Generals AT2's are cheaper than the BFG's and are getting much better reveiws. I got a set of my little jeep and they are awsome, I'll never overpay for BFG's again.

I work for Discount Tire, and would recommend the BFG's. Since you are in NY, try going to DiscountTireDirect.com and see what we are charging for those tires. You might just want to call our 800# and talk to one of our guys. We should beat TireRack...

I've run a set of BFG ATs on at least one truck if not more for over twenty years, and have never been disappointed. I'm about to put a set on my '05 Dmax as the Michelin XPS Traction Ribs I put on a few years ago SUCK in the snow/ice. Actually, they are pretty useless on anything other than dry pavement!

I use the BFG all terrains for my winter tire and love them... i couldnt really tell you about tread life since when the summer rolls around i put on my BFG mud terrains lol

Must be something wrong with me, because EVERYBODY loves Michelins and BFG A/Ts except for me. I wore out a set of Michelin Pilots in 24k on a street driven car, and I had some BFG A/Ts that would not go in the snow. In fact, back when the A/Ts started getting popular I was towing, and I winched more than a few 4wds and plowtrucks out of the ditches that were wearing nice new BFG A/Ts. So it always surprises me when guys say they work well in snow.
I find (also unlike everyone else) that mud tires work better for me for plowing, although that goes against what everyone else says. Maybe if I was plowing flat roads or paved parking lots an AT or a Michelin would suffice.

Personally I really like Goodyears, always had good luck and long wear with them. I love the look of the MTR. You only need a load range E if you're going to freight it down to max capacity.

BFG All-Terrain 30K-80K miles.
Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 25K-75K miles.

Those are the only on/off road tires I would ever consider for my 4x4's. All the others are either too aggressive, too wimpy, cost too much, or dont last long.

I had the BFG T/A's myself. Lasted forever, but really sucked in the snow. Kinda looked funny on my 2WD too. I ended up getting Uniroyal Liberator's 265/75R16 load range E at Wal-Mart. http://www.uniroyaltires.com/tire-se...FQgHbAodgz28ng Tires do great in the snow, don't look goofy on a 2WD on all four wheels, and cost a lot less than the other brands (Uniroyal and BFG are owned by Michelin). I think It was just over 5 bills mounted and balanced.

I personally like the BFG's. 'Snow' is very generic when talking about winter driving. When it's really cold, it is not nearly as slick. I do fine with my AT's up here where it's consistently below zero, but when you get in a climate that has more ice and near-freezing temperatures, most all-season tires just aren't going to cut it. My wife has had a set of AT's on her Tacoma for over 45000 miles and they still have probably 30% tread left. The weight of the vehicle and type of use also play a large factor in tread life. I've had the current sent of AT's on my K10 for about 15000 miles and they look new. I don't think you can go wrong with them in a load range E tire.

Since your are in Younkers, why not swing by Consumer Reports and ask their opinion. They rate best all season General Grabber HTS first (80), then Continental Cross Contact LX (73), then Kuhmo Road Venture APT KL51(72).
The best all terrain truck are Pirelli Scorpion ATR (79), Yokohama Geolander A/T-S (73), Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo (71). Looks like they did not test BFG A/T. When I had BFG A/Ts on my 73 C20 2WD they provided good traction at the dump, but were very noisy and caused some shake on the front suspension on dry pavement. The aggressive tread did not seem to affect gas mileage, but I was only getting 10-11 mpg best anyway in the city, which is the only place I drove it.
