braking problem '83 K10 w 14bff
I have an '83 K10 with 3/4 axles swapped onto it. Its got a corporate 10 bolt in the front and a 14 bolt full floater in the rear w/ drum brakes. I was told that the axles were from a "comparable year" 3/4 truck. Truck was as is when I bought it. I am assuming that it has the stock K10 proportioning valve. My problem is that my rear brakes will lock up very easily with what feels like very little if no braking to the front. has, a couple of times, stalled the engine while braking in gear. Even with just the slightest push of the brake pedal. Makes for some interesting driving characteristics! Its a nightmare(ok, sometimes kind of fun) in the snow! Any thoughts? I was thinking that maybe its a proparitioning valve issue. Thanks for the help guys
Nik

Re: braking problem '83 K10 w 14bff
sounds like you have front brake issues, like they are not working or barely working. you may have air in the lines but it may also be the calipers are siezed. around here calipers for these trucks are only like $20.00 each. worth replacing if suspect. i had a truck once and the inside of the flexible hoses had actually collapsed not letting any brake fluid to pass through to let pressure through to the calipers.
also if you suspect the proportioning valve they say to give it a hard spike, like jump on the brake pedal as hard as you can to reset it. ive never had any luck with that because most times there is something else wrong. |

from what im reading your rear drums are locking up correct....
If so go down to autozone and buy new wheel cylinders... my truck was doing the same thing and i did a complete brake job shoes, cylinders, springs and all... i have not had the problem since
