Long Horn Frames. One Piece Or Sectioned?

I am currently shopping for a project vehicle and I have come to like the Long Horn trucks. I understand that they stretched the bed by welding another one to it, but does any one know how they did the frame?

I am looking at one about 500 miles away and the guy there is useless, he won't crawl under and look.

The goal is to the build a work truck, fifth wheel and all, so I don't want a sectioned frame even though i would like to box it.

Did the long horns have a one piece or did chevy section them?

The Longhorn used the 133" wb chassis from the 1 ton trucks..so no they did not section the frame, its all 1 piece.

Alright, thank you

Now that raises another question. If the Long Horn was considered a 3/4 and used the 1 ton frame... How did a regular 3/4 ton 1 one ton different? was one cab bigger then the other?

Re: Long Horn Frames. One Piece Or Sectioned?

The Longhorns have the heavier frame, 1 ton, because of their camper chassis that they were built to haul. The 3/4 ton Longhorns have lighter rated leaf springs and coil springs, but every thing else is the same. To tell the difference in a Longhorn frame and the regular 3/4 ton pick up frame is pretty simple. Look under the cab area and you will notice that on a Longhorn the frame is taller than a standard 3/4 ton. If I remember correctly it is about 1 1/2" taller than the 3/4 ton standard pick ups. I also think the frame is a little thicker as well, but can't remember on that fact for sure.

Re: Long Horn Frames. One Piece Or Sectioned?

All makes sense but some thing still isn't clicking in my head.

They added 6 inches into the bed and used the one ton frame. The same one ton frame used in non long horn trucks, if i understand it correctly

If they didn't stretch the frame, just added sheet metal where was this 6 inches hiding on the one ton frame?

I think they used 133" 1 ton cab and chassis trucks, then modified a bed to fit.

If the truck you are looking at is a LongHorn, I am jealous, I love those trucks.

OH, the cab and chassis frames... NOW it makes sense.

Thank you.

Yes it is a long horn. I want/need a long box. I figure if i can get another 6 inches, might as well...

Re: Long Horn Frames. One Piece Or Sectioned?

I just got home from looking at a local 72 longhorn. Way too rusty for $1500. The frame is definitely very large and strong on these. In addition to chassis cabs, I am pretty sure a one ton with a long stepside bed also used this same frame. 133" wheelbase.

Even if the frame were sectioned, I wouldn't worry about it. The 01 and up 2500hd's and 3500's have a sectioned frame and they tow up to 16,000 lbs!! Its all in design details and not just the fact that it is a composite frame.
