Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
NP 205 is the 4X4 Transfer Case. I am now running a 700R4 Overdrive Transmission and an NP 208 Transfer. I Love the difference. After swapping out the TH350 and NP203, the lower first gear is nice and the overdrive is even better.

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
Ran it behind a 402BB with 4.10 gears for six years. Loved it. Only reason I am not running it now is a tree fell, flattening the cab. Replacement cab should be on this summer.

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
If you want to run the 700r4/205 in the 67-72 trucks, it works great because you can leave the t case and drive lines alone and simply move the engine foward a couple of inches. This also gives you more room for an HEI.

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
I've been running the NP205 - 700R4 for 6 or 7 years now and there is a world of difference between this setup and the old Turbo 350. Having an overdrive and the ability to regulate the shift points (Bowtie Overdrives transmission linkage gives you that adjustability) is awesome!!
I went with the Level II 700R4 because it has extra heavy duty internals over their standard build. I had them (BTO) install the proper output shaft to match the NP205. Very economical to have them (the experts) do it on their own transmission. Came with a great warranty also. I remember moving my engine forward approximatly 1 3/4". I think most of the new engine and transmission crossmember holes were already drilled in the frame? It was a long time ago, but I'm pretty sure there was minimal drilling. |

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
I put a 700r4 and np205 behind a 500hp 406 in my 78 k20 and it was awesome. I did not move the engine forward but had the drivelines lengthened/shortened. I didnt actually think of moving the engine forward at the time. My truck had 6" w 35's and 4.10 gears and turned 2100 at 65ish on the freeway. I had trouble getting the shift points right where I liked them but finally was able to tune the govenor with a TCI tuning kit. I bought the AA output shaft and aluminum adapter. The only problem I had was that I initially forgot to install the seal on the coupler so my tcase filled with ATF.
I thought the combo worked really well and would recomend it even though the new parts from AA cost a bundle. Phil

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
For those of you that have installed a 700R4 in front of a NP205 transfer case using the Advance Adapter "special" output shaft, have you had clearance issues with the front drive shaft and transmision oil pan.
I thought I had read a post sometime back that mentioned if you were running stock front springs (no lift kit) and used the AA output shaft, you would run into an issue with the CV joint/front shaft coming in to contact with the rear corner of the 700R4 pan. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks, |

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
In the paperwork that you get with the AA output shaft it says exactly that. But I don't know if moving the engine forward 1.75" will help that or not. Seems it should. If you moved the transfer case crossmember back it just might be an issue.

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
I don't have first hand experience as mine has a 4" lift, but I think some of the bulky square body cv joints on the driveline could cause that problem. The 72 cv joint is smaller than some of them that I've seen on the later trucks.

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
Just like Ray says, mine has a 4" lift also. Is it close ... yes. Does it hit ... No. I have had my truck "articulated" in 4 wheel drive and the driveshaft has not touched the pan while wheeling.
Is it close? ... yes. Last edited by 72longbed; 01-21-2011 at 07:48 PM. |

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
Dragging this back to the top to see if anyone else can confirm that while tight the clearance is ok when using the advanced adapter shaft.
I am ready to go on this, but am worried about clearance. 71 blazer fwiw |

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
I just did this swap in my 72 K-10 and it's nice. The truck has a 2.5 inch lift and the space between the front u-joint and trans pan is very close. I would say about 1/2" if that. I bought the Raptor level 3 transmission from PATC for about $2,800 with the shorter tailshaft installed. It also came with a dipstick, TV cable, the bracket for the carb, an oil cooler, and a free t-shirt.

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
So what tailhousing are you using with the 205? Anybody have a photo?
Just to be clear, I'll need X tailhousing AND a longer shaft? |

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
You don't use a tail housing. You use a stock TH-350 to NP 205 adapter and the transmission tail shaft is actually shorter. Or go the other route and buy the spacer that goes between the transmission and transfer case adapter so you can use the stock transmission tail shaft.

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
Yes!, the early CV joint is very close to the pan. I just did a swap on a friends truck. I had to set the joint in place a couple of times to check clearance while dimpling (massaging) the pan with a ball peen hammer for clearance. The CV actually was scraping paint off the pan before hand. I had to sand some of the edges off the CV also.

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
What's the verdict on clearance with stock suspension?
I've got a BTO level II 700r4 w the AA NP205 shaft ready to be installed into my 72 K20 with stock HD springs. The motor mount was moved forward to accommodate the swap. In looking under my stock K10 the only possible conflict I can see is the proximity of the engine crossmember to the front differential. BTO was great to work with. The owner had a 72 K20 and did the same swap.

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
I used the AA shaft, stock Th350 to 205 adaptor and moved the trans crossmember back about 1 inch and enlarged the shifter hole. It all fit, worked and was easy. I do have a non-stock front driveshaft, the splines on both shafts had plenty of travel. I love the trans, went from 3300 RPM at 55 MPH to 1900 RPM at 55 MPH I am running this behind a 454 in a 6500# empty dually dump, I do not race this or go offroading with it, I know I could break the trans if I really tried hard enough but I have had the truck on the scales at 12,600 gross and it's been in there for 6 years with no problems.

Re: 700R4 and NP205 combo
Just put it in with aa short shaft. It clears by a 1/16. Not enough. Looking at the 700r4 pan that corner is where the dipstick drops in and the valve body is a ways away. I am honestly planning on denting the pan slightly to open up the clearance to a half inch or so.
Fwiw I have 2.5 lift kit in front. Posted via Mobile Device |
