Worth it?

I currently have a 14 bolt waiting to bolt into my project, but there is one for sale that is right around an hour away that seems pretty good for $700 the pros & cons of each are listed below, Should I buy this axle and sell mine for some idiot on ebay or should I stick with what I have?

Axle I have:
Pros:
-Spring pads are there and I should be able to bolt them in the '69 K20 (right?)

-I already have it (no traveling)

Cons;
-I plan on converting to disc brakes which will take time and money

-I have no way of proving this but may have been mis-treated (drum is cracked and shock mount broken off.

Other axle
Pros:
-Already converted to disc brakes. (saves time, and then I won't have to buy stuff to convert)

-has a truss welded on

- New bearings/ seals (not actually "just put in" they were put in 2 years ago, but axle was never used)

-Rotors are usable
Cons:
-$700 (already am $900 into mil-spec dana 60 and 14 bolt rear, so I would need to sell the rear I have now for a decent amount)

-surface rust (equal to or less than the one I already have so really dosent matter)

-1 hour away

-Spring pads are gone, set up for coil springs, so would have to cut those off and weld on spring pads & shock mounts (I have to weld shock mounts on the axle I have now too)



*Again I would try sell the one I have if I purchased this one, I would try to get $500-600 out of it,
WHAT WOULD YOU GUYS DO IF YOU WERE IN MY SITUATION?

I don't know about your area but around here I can pick up 14 bolt rears for between 100 and 200 bucks..sometimes even cheaper! I would stick with what you have and just add the disc brakes yourself..its gonna be way cheaper than 700 bucks to do the job. You really dont know what either axle has been thru so put the money in the one you have and when its done you'll know what ya got!

I agree. The 14 bolt that you have will cost you much less to convert. You already have the spring perches in place - BIG PLUS!! - and you don't have to travel.

It isn't that difficult to convert your 14 bolt to disk brakes ... and it's cheap.

Just my opinion.

Thats pretty good pricing, in my area i've seen them that low but they are for the none military axles (most of them are non locked and 4.10 and numerically lower gears). But if I could sell the axle I have for $500 and buy this axle for $700, then it would be like I only spent $200 and this axle has way more than $200 in parts, like the disc conversion and the truss. I am still on the fence with this one, but I need to make a decision in the next 3-5 days.

You guys are finding 14BFF for 100-200 bucks? Are you sure they arent semi floaters?

^ I just bought a 14 Bolt Full Floater for $100 - 15 mins from my house.
There's one about a 45 min drive from me for $75.
And another about 35 mins from me for 125 obo.

Locally, they sell for between $30 for an open in useable condition and at absolute best $100 for one with a locker rear in nice shape.

If the one you have now is mil-spec it is a 4.56 R&P with a detroit locker in it, correct? I'd put the brakes and whatever else it needs on it. $700 sounds way expensive, but whatever the market will bear I suppose....

Yea its 4.56 and has the locker, I'm definitly just going to keep it and convert it, plus I would have had to move the shock mounts on it anyway so it doesnt matter that one is broken off.

I haven't been searching recently but I could only really find 14 bolts that came with front axles and the best I could find on craigslist in PA recently was $550 for mil-spec 14 bolt and dana 60, which I thought wasen't bad considering I spent $900 on my set.

HAHA you guys get all the nice 1 tone drivetrain stuff be we have all the clean rust free bodies. Classic. Yeah around here a CUCV 14bff with 4.56 and detroit will run you about $700-1000.
