Building My Engine up....advice please.

So far this is the best deal I could find on a building my crate engine up for my 84 Silverado. Ive shopped around and it appears this is the best deal so far, correct me if I'm wrong.

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...0002&langId=-1

I plan on using the same pully system, new belts, fan, ect. Besides the few odds in's and outs, what else should I buy before biting the bullet? I want this to be afordable as possible. Not really looking for HP gains, I have a 2 muscle cars for that. This will be my DD and I want a reliable truck. Thanks, any help would greatly appreciated.

Re: Building My Engine up....advice please.

I think it will work fine for that. I would look into a 700R4 over the TH400 in your wish list, though. The lower 1st and 2nd gears and OD really help. Couple that with a 3.42 (or even 3.73) and it will pull well, and still get decentish mileage. I would also check Scoggin Dickey, since you are local.

But I believe those packages are just the block and heads right? I'm looking for something close to turn key ready. I could be wrong Thomas.

Try that. Plus, they are local to you, so you could probably have it today.

Some will say you could do a stock 5.3 swap for less than 3K for everything including harness fuel and computer. A stock salvage 5.3 should be 700 or less. However, that route requires a solid plan or know how. It's getting easier to do the swap, but still takes some work. Ultimately, the swap depends on what you're looking for. If you go the local route, they might pricematch their package to the jets kit. Good luck!

Re: Building My Engine up....advice please.

West Texas Z: Good deal, I totally understand about the budget trust me on that one; and harnalien is right on, the swaps are becoming easier, it's just the planning and more less the time and the small things that comes with it. See if scoggins-dickey will match summit or others so therefore you can best deal as others has mentioned. Good luck and take your time

Re: Building My Engine up....advice please.

I checked on Jegs, Summit, and Scoggins-Dickey when I bought my engine. With Scoggins-Dickey you'll have to pay tax because you are in Texas. With Jegs and Summit you'll have to pay shipping. They all get the same price for the 10067353, so it will be about the same final price with any of them unless one is running some kind of a special.

I have that engine in my truck, and I am very happy with it.

Re: Building My Engine up....advice please.

Thank you for all of the great suggestions!!! I have a mildly built 350 in my 74 Camaro thats I was seriously thinking about swapping into my truck. The problem is that the 350 is cammed and a serious gas guzzler. Here is the Camaro. http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116045

Opinions on that? It would give me a chance to work on the Camaro more and in the future and do something awesome like a LSX swap? Thanks again everyone.

It gonna cost you alot more in the future to replace that motor in the camaro. Hell just the sportsman heads are half the budget lol. whats wrong with the engine in the chevy truck? 305? do a cheap rebuild, instal a stock 350 cam TRW #274 cam or sealed power cs274. Ebay has this cam new right now for like 35 bux.. dual plane intake, 1.6 rockers, headers, no bigger then 600cfm carb, etc. some fine tuning... yada yada. AND I promise..... it will beat up on any stock 350 square.......

The 350 engine in the truck is buring oil on the passenger side like no body's business. Its bad. Its leaking oil in places I didnt know oil could leak from. It runs when on but its burning too much oil for my taste. I just want to start clean and fresh if I plan to keep it longer than 2 years. I want to park my 5.0 and do a full restore in the near future. I'm trying to keep the milage low on my Mustang.

Re: Building My Engine up....advice please.

Pull the engine and swap the cam. That's the cheapest thing to do right now, to get your truck going.

Re: Building My Engine up....advice please.

Ok I might get a good deal on a LS1, the tranny is blown and needs a rebuild. here is the ad:

Quote:
The car has a fresh stock ls1 with 0 miles, 224/ 228 cam on a 113 +2, Pac springs, LS6 ported oil pump,SLP lid, LS6 intake, Pacesetter ceramic coated longtubes, off road y-pipe and flowmaster exhaust.

This guy on the same site is selling a tranny.....
Quote:
Rebuilt 4l60e, novak adapter 4l60e to NP231 adapter, lokar shifter, cricle d heavy duty torque converter $1000 for everything

I havent worked out a deal on the engine yet, but would this tranny work for our trucks? He had this trans on a Jeep with an LS1. Thanks in advance.

Re: Building My Engine up....advice please.

Besides you want a 4l80e for the truck. Its a od th400. I know you say you want to go fresh, and that's awesome! Just wondering if you looked into rebuilding your 350? Even a cheap and dirty rebuild could get you well under 1k. But I totally understand wanting a new one. I am just wondering.

well, I just want to keep it as affordable as possible but if I can get a good deal on the LS1, I'm doing it.

As for the tranny, I'm just looking and learning a bit on everything.

Re: Building My Engine up....advice please.

The LSI was sold as a whole car. so.......I'm doing the swap from the Camaro to the truck. I have a guy that will be doing the swap, any advice on parts I might want to buy new?

Will I need new engine mounts? Headers? I doubt the Camaro's headers will work with the truck. Sorry for all the questions but I'm nervous about all this. haha

those goodwrench crate motors are every where. about two months ago i bought one with 30k miles for 400 dollars completes carb to pan. i would buy a used one and buy a top end package for it. eldelbrock sells a top end package for around 1500 that they rate at 425 hp or around there. thats the way i would go
