Was the 283 V 8 an option for the 1959 Apache pickup?

I'm the new guy on the block. I have a 58 shop manual and it lists 235-261-283trademaster-283taskmaster-348 and a 322. I don't know if it changed in 59.

I found a 59 Apache Fleetside with 283. I've never seen motor mounts located on the front of an engine. I'm looking forward to tearing into it. Its close to running condition. Should give it a go tomorrow. Peter |

It was common to have the front motor mount on 55-57 chev cars,i think with the trucks that ended in 1960 when they introduced the new bodystyle

PETE before you tear into it can you take some pictures or measuremnts of the mounts for me?My 58 had a 6 in it and iam changeing to a v8. I don't want to change to side mounts and need to know wherethe front mounts go. The back ones go into the bell housing. I think i can make those. john

photos & measurements
john
I've been attempting to start the motor for three days. Not straight just when I have time. As soon as that happens I'll arrainge for photo and/or measurement for the front motor mounts. Have you received the factory manual ? I ordered several manuals which should arrive soon. I'll check those out for the mounts if they arrive before I start the beast. Swiching out the carb tomorrow. Should do the job. Pete |

i have a 55 original v8 that still has the front mounts in it --they have a bracket on either side of the timing cover and a strut rod that goes to a crossmember at the front of the engine bay---they look like sway bar end links on steroids--i'll try to get some pics----also i have the original 3spd trans-complete with bell housing, output shaft, and column shift linkage--if your intrested you can reach me at bertke1@bellsouth.net

If I am not mistaken I think 58 was the first year for the 283 in trucks, I know 59's had 283's for sure.

pickup V8's started in late 55 w/ the 265 - late 57 went to 283 - big trucks had optional 283 after mid 56, I think - all trucks had 283 option afterend of 56
my 58 was originally a 6 - complete mounts are available from most suppliers - like Carter Bill |

Please take note that the V-8 radiator mounts are in a different location than the 6-cylinder mounts. Both engines front mount, but the V-8 is shorter than the 6-cyliner and the radiator mount sits closer to the firewall than the 6 cylinder does, thus the radiator gets better cooling.
If I am not mistaken, the motor mounts are the same and in the same location for both fhe V-8 and 6-cylinder. The first year for the 283 in a truck was offically 1958, as the 283 began as a passenger engine in Chevrolets in 1957. The 322 was a "big 6" and the 348 was the "big-block" orginator followed by its brother the 409. The 348 truck engine was a major torque machine with tons of pulling power but NOT AT ANY DRAG RACE SPEEDS! My 2-cents worth, rico_bob www.ricos-rods-and-relics.com

No the motor mounts are not the same location. I just put the new mounts for a v8 in my 58. Mine had a 6 in it. If you go to American Classic truck parts site and look up mounts, you will see part #ME830. They are held on with 5 bolts on the front cross member. The 2 big holes on the cross member are where the 6 cyl mounts were. john j
