Re: gauges used in s10 swap? pics please
I went with a custom set from New Vintage (custom meaning I have km/h for driving in Canada)... Liked the old style look with the modern aspect. Made a set of adapter rings to set them off and they bolt right in. And an indicator set for my signal lights and shifts.
Cheers, Ted.

I'd love to hang around your shop I bet I would learn a lot of cool stuff. I priced about $550 thats bad enough, right now I have the roadmaster dash setting on the column so we could get the turn signals to work.

Maybe a dumb question... Can you use the original gauges?

Re: gauges used in s10 swap? pics please
The originals are all 6 volt, so maybe with some creative wiring and resistors. Or go to one of the aftermarket shops online and pick up the 12 volt repops and put them in the original faces....
Certainly ALOT cheaper than what I paid for mine... Don't ask... just don't ask... Cheers, Ted.

Plus, if you're using a transmission made in the last 20 years it likely has a VSS not a speedo, so when you factor in the price of a cable-x box to run a speedo cable it doesn't seem as bad.

Re: gauges used in s10 swap? pics please
You really only need a resistor to drop the voltage for the fuel gauge. You can use the rest if you really want to. The speedo is mechanical obviously.
If you search my name in a few places or Danimal, you'll find where I have a tech post on putting Autometer gauges in my son's '54. |

any speedo cable recommendations, brand, length, compatibility with TH350. Jimmy i think that gauge cluster is pretty damn good looking. Thad...that is way to rich for my blood on gauges. They look great, but wow is that a chunk. for a rat I just can't spend it.

Re: gauges used in s10 swap? pics please
On my 54 I gutted the stock gauge housings and put crappy Dolphin 5" quads in place. You could can do the same with the 53 and earlier I would think. The 54 guages are a tad larger.
Just do not use Dolphin gauges |

I'm toying with the idea of running 67/68 Camaro factory gauges, possibly with white faces from an ebay kit.

Re: gauges used in s10 swap? pics please
I think if they're 5" and you can find a quad setup, it would be a pretty damn good swap!
Great thinkin! Cheers, Ted.

Re: gauges used in s10 swap? pics please
I'm planning to go with a quad setup, with an electronic speedometer in my '50. After installing a similar setup in my '73 I can't imagine not using an electronic speedometer. I spent no more than 10 minutes programming the speedometer and according to my GPS the speedometer reads within 1-2 MPH. No hassle with transmission gears, running speedometer cables etc etc.

Seriously though, yes, for mine which is the Dolphin brand, it was a piece of cake. The instructions said to drive a measured mile and select a "start" and "end" feature with the programming button. I drove my then daily driver that had a trip meter to measure out the mile. There was no speed requirement so I measured a mile from the end of my street to the mile point. I went back home, hoped in the truck and drove the mile, it was that simple. I checked my newly programed speedometer against my GPS and it was darn near spot on. I'm sold on them. At some point I'm going to replace the mechanical AutoMeter unit in my S-10 with an electric one. Any future speedometer purchases will be electric as well.

Re: gauges used in s10 swap? pics please
Yep. Autometer tells you to do 2 miles. It ended up being the mailbox at one end of my road to a stop sign at the other end. You hit the button, start driving at 45 mph (if you can) and then stop and hit the button again. I had my son follow me in my DD, set it, and then I tried to keep up with him on the way home. It was dead on all the way up to 85 mph. We just didn't tell his mom...
Here is a post I did a while back on the swap: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=269446 Last edited by Dan Bowles; 01-22-2011 at 06:45 PM. |
