Re: ...differentiating engines cu in.
I recently figured out with the help of others on here, so I will pass on what I learned;
There are 3 places which the engine block is marked, 1st one is called the block casting number, which is located at the driver side rear of the block right next to where the transmission bolts up, 2nd place is the block date code which is on the passenger side of the block opposite the casting number, 3rd place is the engine ID code/ V.I.N. code which is located on the passenger side front of the block where the headers bolt on. I will d/l pics for you since that is how I best learn. There is also a website that I will link here that was very helpful with decoding the information I had gathered http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php I believe the engine ID code/ V.I.N. code gave me the most info, where it was built, date it was built, size and hp. I will also up load pictures of what mine looked like. 1. pic...is the block casting number -3970010 2. ......engine ID code/ V.I.N. code -V0712TJZ (pic is upside down) 3. ......block date code -C83, I couldn't get a better picture, online it says its a 4 digit..but not always I wish I had better pictures for you...eventually I will. I hope this helps you, and if you already knew this stuff, then disregard. And if anyone wants to help me out here, Im hoping I covered it well

Oh... just to muddy the water more...
I have in my possesion a camaro 327 block... but as I started to tear it down, I realized someone built it with 350 pistons, rods, and crank... So its a 350 in 327 clothing!
