3.5/5" drop questions

How are you guys coming up with your 3.5/5" drop. I see some guys have listed ECE as the source for them, yet I cannot find a kit like that on their site. I see 2/4 and 4/6. Any help is appreciated.

It's basically the same as the 4/6 drop, but with a 1" spring in place of the 1.5" in front and a 5" spring in place of the 6" for the rear. When you call them, just tell them you want a 3.5/5 kit.

Ok thanks. When I got on their site, I just went to the "kits" section and didn't think about getting the parts individually. I will give them a call.

so what the advantage of doing the 3.5/5 rather than the 4/6... are thier clearance issues with the 4/6" does the 3.5/5 sit perfectly level?

Not really clearance isssues. Just simply different strokes for different folks. For me it was the fact that I already had 1" drop spring in the front, so I just got spindles and rear springs.

There is an advantage of doing a 3/5 kit. (not 3.5 up front)
It can be cheaper because it can be lowered up front with just a 3" drop spring and no spindle.
I do not prefer this method.
Spindles should be your first choice,... and then add springs to get it lower.

so to do it right, what spindles would i need to get? and can all the drop be done in the rear with coils?

Most 67-72 spindles are 2.5" drop.
Most companies sell up to a 5" rear spring.
ECE sells a 6" rear spring.
I prefer ECE (www.earlyclassic.com) for my 67-72 truck suspension parts.

The rear drop can be done with springs and blocks,... but why spend the extra cash,... when most springs are all the same price, regardless of drop amount?

I went with 3.5/5 just to be on the safe side as I may actually haul stuff and I don't want to bottom out. It seems the general consensus is that 4/6 drop is the most you can go without doing a c-notch. My 3.5/5 does not sit level.

I would just make your own kit.
You can use a 2.5 spindle
A 3" front spring (I know,... 5.5" drop)
and a 6" rear spring with a 1" block.

Alot of vendors make and sell drop spindles. For our trucks, most are 2.5" drop. Some make 2" and I believe Western Chassis makes a 3" drop spindle. My recommendation is ECE. As for the rear, you can any drop spring up to 6". If you want to go lower than that, you will have to use lowering blocks. Blocks mount between the axle pad and trailing arm.

Also, I noticed you have a 70. If your truck has not been converted to disc brakes yet, disc brakes are necessary for a spindle drop. 63-70 and 71-72 years have different ball joints and tie rods, but you can buy drop spindles that use 63-70 style components, so you wouldn't have to convert everything to 71-72 style parts. You can also purchase 6-lug rotors so you don't have to change rearends or axles.

I do agree on the ECE... i will be buying all my stuff from them...

For reference... here's a 4.5/6" ECE Drop with 6-lug Disc Brake Upgrade (all parts came with their kit and nothing else was needed). Added 20x8.5 and 20x10 Billet Specialties Vintecs SL running 255/40 and 295/40 Toyo Proxes s/t II's without any rubbing issues.

Beautiful truck 72blkbebuty! I love seeing the comparisions because I'm getting ready to drop a good chunk of change on the kit and tires/wheels and don't want to be disapointed in the results.

I like the stance of your truck..4.5/6, did you have to leave out the rear rubber stops over the axles? And did you have to grind the lower a-arm where the rubber stop was? Trying to get some idea of what I may need to do, my frame is already powder coated.

I will tell you this... not only was I surprised with the ride quality of the 4.5/6" drop, but my FIL was as well, and he has a bad back. I don't think you will be disappointed.

You can get a genral idea of what it will look like but each truck sits a little different. I have the same set up as 68 stepbed but mine looks alot higher in the back, i have 17's also.

Both trucks look great, but it looks like 68step has a bit larger tire. I was pretty set on 18s, but those 17s look good too. What sizes are you guys running? Are those TT II's? Thanks for the responses!
