Thought I would put this here to ask opinions. Building a stake bed for my lwb 64 because i think it will end up cheaper than fixing the bed i got with it which needs $$$ in replacement panels. So here goes nothing... Making the frame for it out of 3" C channel and putting flat stock steel along the sides. Should be starting tomorrow or the next day when the steel shows up and some shop space clears.

Here is the poll portion of the thread....

the dang sides. Too many options so i drew up 8 of them and want your opinions. also, I am attaching some ideas for "tailgates" for a stakebed (please forgive a F#$^ and a D*&%#$)

any suggestions advice would be greatly appreciated. oh and I know it is a 60-63 cab in the drawings but couldn't find the equivalent drawing from a 64-66 catalog.

If your truck is a Dual rear tire then i agree 1,3,4 if it is a single rear tire then 5

It depends...do you plan on using the bed to haul things? What kind of things? That will dictate what style you will want to have

If not just go with what looks good to you

It is a half ton. Single rear wheel. I took the most popular responses and tweaked and came up with an additional 3 (9*, 10*, 11*, and 12*). I know... more options. But I have time to sort it out and get what i want.

As to what I will be hauling... Dogs, Small Boys in the neighborhood, and anything else i can come up with. I just wanted it versatile. To that end i split some of the side boards to make give it more configurations.

It will end up just being what I think looks best but I do want to know what you guys think. and wow didn't think #2 would be as popular.

Im not a fan of the step down style stake sides. For what you listed having gaps in the boards won't be an issue. I would do 4, 5, or 9 as a solid side will look better than a sectioned one (no matter what you do they will never line up evenly)

as for the blue truck with the small sides. I just don't like how small the tailgate would be but the debate still continues...

Also Day One Progress:
Metal Cut. Laid Out. Tacked. Finish welding tomorrow.

Details. No It doesn't touch the frame in the center but there is zero flex so not worried. Yes there could probably be another cross sill in the rear section between the rear two but didn't plan material for it and don't think it is necessary. I could over build this thing but am not. We will see if I regret it later. The light use it will see makes me doubt it.

Also tried to use 3" channel to "level" the frame out for the runners but was going to run into clearance issues with the suspension drop causing tire rub. Moved up to 5" channel and problem solved unless I carry enormous loads.
More Tomorrow.

As a kid I spent alot of time riding in the back of one of these and if you cut off the 2nd one down on #7 and make it so that there are 2 sections on the sides that would be the truck that started it all for me..it was even the same color

and there was a block of wood cut to even up the frame so the bed layed flat on it....

I was doing a restore when I went off to the Military and it was stolen before I got back from over seas..bummer cuz dad had bought it new...and I learned alot of lessons in that old truck!!

Updates from friday and today. Took the bed off the truck and finish welding the supports. Decided to add a hitch because as soon as i didn't put one on i would need it. Remembered the HD dealer accessory bumper that came with this beast and decided to add it. Then made a panel to cover the rear of the whole she-bang.

Finished that up today and added tail lights. Hoping the weather holds off so I can pull the bed and paint the frame and bed tomorrow. Bumper and all will be black but after its all said and done I may go back and fill the dealer name and location that are cut into the bumper with white paint.

Also got the wood ordered so all that is left is paint and wood I think.

There always has to be a "but."

I got the wood for the bed and all of it laid up on the frame to get an idea for weight. My worst fears were realized. My 5" drop springs are too much. See Picture...

So truck is sitting on the bump stops in the the rear. Simple solution.. take them off. That gets me 2 1/2 inches. Notch the frame. That buys me all I need but then the first thing to rub would be the bed wood. Not sure i see that as a huge problem. Or relocate bump stops after notching the frame possibly...

Neither of these fix the problem of the unlevel truck.. There are 5" drop springs on it now. So order new ones.. 3 or maybe 2 inches?

Thoughts are right now to sell the 5" springs to fund some 3" springs and see where I am after that. Then notch the frame if need be. Thoughts?

I've been waffling back and forth about whether to stakebed my 3/4 t- this is serious inspiration.

Beautiful work!

Could you perhaps get a set of those overload springs to help keep the rear up, but not too much? The ones that look like quarter ellipticals.

Looking good so far. As for the style, it would depend on if its for show or for hauling a bunch of stuff. I like the lower profile ones for the looks.

Have any of you used the HD springs? or Air shocks on these trucks. Need to level this girl up and have some clearance. Notch is starting soon but need some lift as well to keep the ol girl's rear end from sagging.

Ideas?

Just wanted to put up a somewhat final shot of the bed. Thanks for all the opinions. Went with number five. Still waiting on HD 4" drop springs to pick the back up a bit. But it carried the finacee,the two boys and a hound dog back there with out much trouble over the weekend (The Mother-in-Law to be got to ride up front). Still want to stain the wood but I am really pleased with how it turned out.

Other than the springs the last thing i need is latches for the corners to tie it all together and make it more solid...
