putting one tons under a truck wont make a diffrence in anything really, youll just have 8 lug wheels. i dont think you will gain any heights off a one ton axle swap

This is my 77 shortbox with a dana 60, Nothing too major vs a 44. Make sure to use a steering box brace because the frames on the K5 and shorty are thinner than the 1 tons, and man is it a heavy axle! Has dually hubs in the photos that have since been cut down

Re: Pictures of K5s and Shortboxes with 1 Ton axles??

yea youll gain alot of strength but the only thing that could change would be how wide the axles are if you happen to get a dually front axle and a van rear 14 bolt.

Just wondering why you keep trying to crap on my build?? FYI, it is an ALL ORIGINAL TRUCK that is still ALL TOGETHER. I will be taking it apart for my other toys. I have been building these trucks for over 25 years and have 14 of them. I know the difference between a DRW and SRW!!! Thanks for playing.

I think he was asking me that, No, the 14 bolt that I have is not out of a dually, If it was though, you would only have to swap hubs and move the perches, not the end of the world. The front DRW vs SRW difference is only the hubs, which is easily solved

calm down there killer, i was just making sure you werent goin to run into any unexpected axle fitment problems. but to each his own i guess, have fun with all that jazz.

just one question you said youve been building these trucks for 25 years and you want to see what one will look like with 1 tons under them. surly over your 25 year of your infinate wisdom building these trucks you would have seen one and noticed there is no diffrence.

WOW!! I guess the reason there such a site as this is for truck aficionado's to come together and share knowledge and PICTURES!!!!!!There are many men here who know a boatload more than I and have built some incredible machines. I just wanted to see a nice trail rig or show truck instead of the run of the mill mud trucks. I grew up with those all day long. As for difference, there is a HUGE difference in the swap. Many components to consider. Thanks for asking.

Its hard to reference a truck that you saw one time or use to own, its alot easier to look at a picture.

Re: Pictures of K5s and Shortboxes with 1 Ton axles??

yeah, I swapped the 60 out of the shortbox to put it in the blazer. I have 2 14 bolts that have disc brakes, but one has a posi and the other one is welded (PO).

Do you have a truck to swap the axles into yet or are you in the planning stages?

I have a 1980 Shortbox and a 4 Speed K5 Blazer like yours. I have a couple of 1 Tons and this one is one I will use as parts.

What are you talking about? It appears to me he is considering putting one ton axles under a SWB truck or Blazer. There are a LOT of differences and advantages with a heaver axle, and it seems as if you know that.

Either offer some advice, or move along....

Re: Pictures of K5s and Shortboxes with 1 Ton axles??

When I had my '79 K5, I swapped in a 14 bolt rear from a '79 3/4 ton truck and it was a direct bolt in. Only change was the drive shaft u-joint--I don't have the part number but it is sold at all the parts stores, and of course you'll need larger u-bolts.

For some great photos, head on over to ColoradoK5.com and almost everyone there has done this swap.
