Played in the snow some

Played around in the snow with the Jimmy some. The Wrangler RTII were OK on the pavement. I really don't like the Gov-Lok that's in my SF 14. Unlocks at just the wrong time trying to do donuts.

Re: Played in the snow some

gov-locs are a touchy piece, hell I think I'm just gonna put mini spools in my d44 front and 14 rear prolly be a ***** locking the hubs in but it should be damn near unstoppable that way just dont try and make fast tight turns on pavement :-D

Nice! How much snow did you get? We only had about a 1/2 inch but it was still nice to see the white stuff around here.

Nice Mike C. We got some down here too. I drove my Blazer two and half hours to work. It did great! I even rescued some people that were stuck. I was very happy how it did on the ice.

We got probably an inch and a half. It was a nice break. By this afternoon, all gone and 68 degrees!

Re: Played in the snow some

Nice Jimmy! I am not sure about the 14 bolt SF, but I modified my FF gov lock to lock up quicker, and stay locked at higher speeds. I drive alot in sand dunes and did not want a one-legger half way up the dune. Its worked great so far!

Re: Played in the snow some

I'm game. Just depends on work, kid's sports schedule, etc.

@Coyote '72, What do mods consist of? Increasing # of clutches? Thicker plates? Wedging the fly-weight?

I've got a FF Detroit and an '85 crew cab chevy with a 4.10 rear. I need to come up with a new rear for the '85 and I might swap the FF in. I've got another Jimmy project that the SF could find a home in, but for the most part my truck is just a street driver anymore. My jeeps are off-road only.

Re: Played in the snow some

I did add one clutch plate....I had added two but the truck barked the tires just backing out of the driveway. There is a little mechanizm inside with flyweights that senses a difference in wheel speed. I want to say stock lockup happened when there was a 10-15mph difference in wheel speed. This is the reason I thought most of them break; its a lot of force to get a 33" tire from 0 to 15mph at the snap of a finger. I put that mechanizm in my drill press and figured out what rpm the flyweights opened at. Then I modified the spring inside till the rpm was much lower. I can jack up one side of the rear with the truck in neutral and get about 1/2 a turn of the tire by hand before it locks. The other part in there is a weight that swings out at about 25mph. I removed a little more than half of the weight therefore leaving the possibility of the locker being engaged at a higher speed. The locker is only active when there is a difference in wheel speed so I did not worry about any locker issues on the freeway. Hope this helps!

Got mine out last night. Wasn't deep snow but the roads were bad. Thought I would share.
