Please help
i have a 72 c10 with a stock 454 in it. It has a 750 edlebrock prefomer carb and an edelbrock aluminium intake. Thats it. it has dual exhuast (no headers) everything else is stock. I want some opinions on what i should do to get this 3800 lbs of steel moving! I'm new to ths type of thing and don't know much. Thanx

Re: Please help
If the engine is operating properly the first thing I would do is change the rear axle ratio to a 3.73 Most likely it is a 2.73 or 3.08 factory. Then I would swap in a 700r4 trans and the acceleration will be even better because the first gear ratio is beter than the turbo350/400.

Re: Please help
In addition to the rear end gearing and the deeper 1st gear the 700r4 has, I'd put some headers on that 454 to help it breathe better, upgrade to HEI,.... The list a can go on and on. Depends on how deep your pockets are.

Re: Please help
headers for sure, if she's just for around town some 4.11's in the rear, a Barry Grant Street Demon Carb, MSD HEI, mostly bolt on's, without swapping the cam and heads. Maybe some NOS, 100HP shot.

Re: Please help
I would think that a 454 truck would run pretty good as is. Maybe before throwing a ton of money at it you should figure out if its running as well as it can now.
Dual exhaust and manifolds is a nice reliable performance compromise. Headers like to leak and blow out gaskets. I'd suggest a tuneup, clean the fuel system, and check the timing. |
